And just to show your photos do not have to be so impressive as those, my own more modest tuskless cow photos. *** Gentlemen, Don't worry if they have been posted before, the "game threads" are a collection by animal species, and are aimed to be a permanent record on NE. |

Save Zim: If you have noticed - all the time there was a second cow there somewhere (see the tusk difference) that ended much closer than the one in the sequences (it is the one you don't see that will kill you ) |

XAUSA are you Johnny Depp's father? He looks like you. As always, you have nice trophies. You were so fortunate to hunt in that golden age, both time and place. Any photos of your trophy rooms? |

Ann, there's no tellin' how many times I've watched that great shot! |

Here's one I actually did take with the .458 Teck. This was in Kenya in 1971, up near the Tana River. The old guy had recently broken off the other tusk and the nerve was still festering. The one remaining weighed in at 94 pounds. Had the nerve not been so large, it would have gone over 100. He was on his last set of teeth and they were so worn down he would not have lasted much longer at any rate. http://www.frappr.com/?a=viewphoto&id=3823381&pid=6889577 This one was taken in the Selous in 1972. The ivory was long and relatively thin: ran about 75 pounds to the side, which is pretty good for the area. I climbed up on top of a termite mound to shoot this one, since I didn't have a ladder handy. One shot behind the ear did the job. http://www.frappr.com/?a=viewphoto&id=3823381&pid=6977482 |

Congrats Jungleboy! So how was the hunt? I'm in the process of sorting a Bull hunt. I also had the pleasure of toting a 500NE in a similar H&H as yours the other day. Sweet! |

I has been a LONG time since I logged on, but I seem to have survived Obummernomics and I've been thinking of getting back to Africa with my son and doing some elephant hunting. So I open African Hunting and what do I see? An irresistable opportunity to re-live some hunts by going through photos. My elephants, all shot with a Marcel Thys sidelock in 458wm: First elephant, a tuskless, 2005: Second elephant, second tuskless, 2005: Third elephant and tuskless, 2006: Fourth elephant and tuskless, 2006: Fifth elephant and fifth tuskless, 2006: Sixth elephant and tuskless, 2006: Seventh elephant and tuskless, 2006: Eigth elephant and tuskless, 2006: Ninth elephant and first bull, 2006: Tenth elephant and second bull, 2006: Eleventh elephant, first tusked cow, shot in self defense. More than one photo since the cameraman didn't flinch. The cow was at less than seven paces from a tracker to the right of the photo, as later walked off, 2006: Reloading after missing the brain shot with both barrels, but stopping her. Getting in two fatal heart/lung shots. Twelveth elephant, third bull, 2008: Thirteenth elephant, ninth tuskless, tenth cow, 2008: Fourteenth elephant, fourth bull, 2008: Fifthteenth elephant, tenth tuskless, eleventh cow, 2008: Sixteenth elephant, eleventh tuskless, twelfth cow: Seventeenth elephant, second tuskled cow, thriteenth cow, shot in a f' up, which cost a couple of thousand dollars in fine, 2008: Eigthteenth elephant, fifth bull, 2008: Just going though the photos has my blood pumping. Need to get on a fitness program, I'd melt like a stick of butter if I went elephant hunting now. JPK |

JPK: Wow, that's a lot of biltong you supplied! 18 elephants, I can only dream. Well done. I really like the pic of your ninth elephant with all those villagers waiting to get their chance. ADAM: I would have no hesitation in recommending Karl Stumpfe for an elephant hunt. He has a couple of areas in the Caprivi & a seperate area in Botswana. Not sure if Botswana is going to stay open next year? If you're not interested in keeping the ivory, he has some great deals on management bulls (broken tusk, crop raiders,...). In my opinion, he hunts the "classic" way with lots of tracking & gets up close & personal with them!! IMHO, a 500NE would be the perfect elephant rifle. However, I never felt undergunned with either the 450/400 or the 500/465. Didn't you just buy a 450NE double? |
Good to see you back on line John! Jim, Thanks for the reference. Sadly the 500 was someone else's and yes I did just purchase a 470. |
JPK, you are an inspiration! Grand adventures... You certainly make that .458WM double work a treat! |
Thanks guys. I remember each hunt for each elephant, and especially the final approaches. Almost like they were yesterday. Adam, good to be back. And good to see you getting back into double rifles too! Hmm, 470... that can mean only one thing! (Well, two I guess, since buff make good 470 fodder along with eles. Though klipspringers aren't too bad either, eh?) I'm still sore from Obamanomics but on the rebound. The company I run is on the rebound too, but we had to cut to the bone and lay off 45% of our personnel to survive. Laying off people for no fault of their own is painful for me, no matter how neccesary, and there is no way I'm going to be elephant hunting or taking extravagant trips or even time off when others are suffering. We're hiring again, and some of our new hires are old hands, which is gratifying. Anyway, I am looking forward to my next elephant hunt. Next year I think. Sitting behind the desk so long has me softer and fatter; time to get off my duff and into some semblence of shape. And to re-aquaint myself with the Thys. Has 500grns (Dan McCarthy) been active? I believe Obamanomics may have had him struggling. I last saw Dan in Zimbabwe in 2008, and last communicated with him later that year. I wonder if he has managed some elephant hunting since then. Speaking of the 500NE, that was Dan's favorite for elephants, probably still is. JPK |
