Re: Cape Buffalo thread! Post your photos.

My cape buffalo, only one so far. I have a half passable photo of it, "in the flesh" somewhere on a transparency. I actually had run out of film and had purchased some Kodak film in Zimbabwe in 2002, and it turned out to be quite faulty. And the cape buffalo photos are what had suffered. So did not have a lot to choose from.

Anyway here are some photos of the shoulder mount and some other goodies.

An old bull, not long in the horns at all, but I was happy to take him as the first buff, as I had two on the quota. Hunted hard for the second but never connected.

I was happy to even get a cape buffalo at all, as this was the hunt where on day 3 in the Gwayi Valley when the "warvets" turned up and turfed us all, outfitter/owner and all off the property. A week later we managed to get a spot in the HHK concession in the Matetsi Safari area and take this old bull.

Ahem, well, yes, it's my Krieghoff .458 Winchester Magnum Teck box lock over and under. Actually, I used my wildcat .505 SRE on these three and only carried the .458 to do some "let's make sure he's really dead" shots. I was trying to peddle Krieghoff DR's at the time, and thought the photos might look good in advertising material. They must not have, since I had a hard time selling them at $2500 a throw.

The .505 did its job. Three buff with four shots. Only the one I was sitting on actually required a second shot, and he was sick enogh I think he would have gone down, too, if we'd left him alone. Better safe than sorry.

With everything except buffalo the tracker used to walk up and poke the animal in question in the eye with the shooting sticks to see if there was any reflex. If not, they could start skinning.

With a buffalo, they walked up behind him carefully and twisted his tail, presumably so that if he came back to life he would be pointed in a safe direction. Wise move.

Those double and triple buff photos like that look great, but if planning for shoulder mounts in hot weather you might have a problem. No problem if doing Euro mounts though.

The rifle is a custom .416 Taylor. The gun started out as a Ruger and went from there.
The picture was taken in 2005. I was in Zimbabawe hunting this past September and understand Lou is still doing hunts for HHK as well as freelancing.
I have hunted with him twice and he is a wonderful guy. He has years of stories and can keep you entertained around a fire for hours.

Re: Cape Buffalo thread! Post your photos.

This is my last Cape buffalo, taken in 1975 in Kenya. A local herdsman told us that the old boy liked to take a siesta every day in a clump of bushes he could lead us to. I was stationed on one side of the bushes, standing on a rock ledge overlooking the potential action.

The boys started throwing rocks and yelling from the other side and the old boy came out as though shot from a cannon. I managed to empty the magazine on my .505, four shots. He stopped so suddenly that his nose plowed up the dirt. A post mortem revealed three of the four bullet holes in the right shoulder, in a group which could be covered with a playing card. Why the recoil didn't knock me off my perch I'll never know.

It was from the Aberdares region on the lower slopes of Mt. Kenya. The sister of my PH's wife was married to the manager of a large cattle/sheep operation owned by the Italian car manufacturer, Lancia. On both trips to Kenya, we stopped over for a couple of days with them and hunted on the property and the adjacent area.

It offered a wonderful insight into the operation of a ranching operation in the days after Uhuru, and the way of life of the participants. While we were there, an election was held, and all the African "help" were given the day off to vote. This put Verity Williams and her sister in the kitchen, where they obviously were not used to being, but they coped marvellously in an environment almost devoid of modern conveniences.

Verity's sister and her husband, the Stone-Wiggs, had a long rambling open house, reminiscent of the photos of Karen Blixen's, with beautiful flowers and shrubbery, and a grass tennis court, the only one I have ever played on. Not having tennis shoes with me, I played barefoot, an amazing sensation.
Their children were off at boarding school, but I was later able to comply with their request to supply them with new steel framed tennis raquets, which were unavailable at the time in Kenya.

Charlie Stone-Wigg was quite a character. He had lost an eye in a shooting incident during the Mau-Mau "unpleasantness" and had suffered a bout of polio as an adult, which made the use of one arm difficult, but that didn't stop him from being the top polo player on the Kenya team. His favorite polo pony, named "Christine Keeler", was once loaned to Prince Charles, while he was on a state visit in Kenya. He was said to have remarked, "I can hardly wait to tell my Dad that I've been astride Christine Keeler!"

The most terrifying experience I had in three trips to Africa was driving cross country in Charlie's Land Rover with Charlie at the wheel. He drove like a mad man, totally oblivious to the danger of wart hog holes and other features of the African landscape. The fact that he had no depth perception, due to the loss of the eye, only added to the risk.

I took this fellow during a previous visit with the Stone-Wiggs:

After writing the above, on impulse I Googled Charlie Stone-Wigg's name, and to my horror was referred to this: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article1008865.ece

Charlie and Ann had survived an almost identical attack, when their bedroom was invaded by Mau Mau terrorists in 1959, which, as the article says, cost Charlie his eye, but his assailants their lives. Evidently the bedroom door was not locked this time.

I have emailed Ann's sister, Verity Williams, to try to find out whether Ann recovered.

xausa,

Sad to hear of the new attack, murder of Charles and I hope your friend Ann is recovering.

It is sad that beautiful Africa always seems so full of these sorts of stories, and it seems often a peaceful death is denied to many in that continent. In Kenya and South Africa it seems that sort of end is the lot for many white rural dwellers and farmers nowadays. A form of ethnic genocide which the liberal Western press chooses to ignore.

Here are a few Buff.

From July 2006. Took 5 shots from my 416 Rigby! 350 grain TSX. Longest shot was 30 yards in some pretty thick stuff. Exciting!

Check out the horn structure on this old cow from the Makuti Safari Area in October 2010. She had 2 teeth remaining. Perfect harvest from a conservation standpoint!

This is a cow taken by my oldest son in July 2009. I got to help out on this one with the 500 NE!

Did you get to keep the horns, skull, cape or whatever from these cow buffs taken, especially if taken as bait for cats?

Or hunted as cow buff trophies?

Re: Cape Buffalo thread! Post your photos.

Yes John. I was able to keep them all. Being a non CITES animal makes the difference between Buff cows and Tuskless Ele's in regards to leaving the country with them, I suppose.

By the way, that pic posted by Powdersmoke just doesn't look like a bull to me in any way shape or form. The horns are very thin and there is NO boss that I can make out. Am I wrong on this? It certainly is wide but looks more like that big cow that Dick Cabela took several years ago to me. Anyone know the details on it and are there any photos from a different angle. It appears to me that the angle was purposefully taken from as low as possible in order to avoid exposing the top of the boss area. It looks closer to the cow Maddog posted with the wide spread. What do you think?

Cheers,

Todd

Cool.

Quote:

Yes John. I was able to keep them all. Being a non CITES animal makes the difference between Buff cows and Tuskless Ele's in regards to leaving the country with them, I suppose.

Todd,

I was wondering as sometimes for the "bait" animals the outfitter does not allow a trophy to be taken. Which seems a waste.

Quote:

By the way, that pic posted by Powdersmoke just doesn't look like a bull to me in any way shape or form. The horns are very thin and there is NO boss that I can make out. Am I wrong on this? It certainly is wide but looks more like that big cow that Dick Cabela took several years ago to me. Anyone know the details on it and are there any photos from a different angle. It appears to me that the angle was purposefully taken from as low as possible in order to avoid exposing the top of the boss area. It looks closer to the cow Maddog posted with the wide spread. What do you think?

Cheers,

Todd

Looks like a cow to me too. If it was on the wall as a shoulder mount, a cow for sure.

Still a magnificent long set of horns. Worth taking it whether a cow or not.

Ha ha, either Oz is romantically interested in you, especially seeing that H&H, or he is asking whether "you scratched your darling new H&H?" My guess anyway.

Ahhh, got you, scratched ???? It pissed down with rain for the first two days, tried to keep the barrels down but.... wiped her off after day one, opened cleaning kit, no oil ! used 3 in one but day four had that horrible reddish liquid under ejector rods, took off locks and dumped locks in oil for 5 mins, no probs but she goes into Hollands end Oct for a full service after 2 safaris and 3 monterias, the girl is carrying the scars The Buff involved an 11km stalk, a lot on my back and front, the rifle was nearly as gritty as me !

This is my first (attempt) at a post, but it seems like the right place for me. I have enjoyed browsing the site for a few months, but now I look forward to participating. Anyway, if this works the photo will show my Zimbabwean Bull taken in Chete in 2008.

Looking forward to being a member, and yes, at this point in my life all I really want to hunt is Cape Buffalo.

Best to all,

No problem, do I do that here as a response or somewhere else? Sorry - I'm new at this so I want to follow protocol. If it's a hunt report would it be better to start that as an independent thread?

First of all, welcome to NitroExpress. Glad you decided to join in.

As far as posting a hunt report, you can post it in this forum, the African Hunting Forum, on a new thread. Thanks.

The Hunt Reports Report Forum is more designed as a forum for posting more clinical reports on the successes or failures of a hunt, positive or negative aspects of outfitters, agents, concessions etc. But some members post stories there too.

This was my first hunt in Africa and I took a tuskless cow ele at 11yds and this nice buff at 35yds with my 400 - both one-shot kills. We never measured him, but Buzz said he's around 38in. I posted a full hunt report on AR and would be glad to provide a link of that on this site or copy it here, but I'm not sure that is kosher.

They were helmet like. Johnny left the shot choice up to me. It was day two of a seven day and a perfect broadside shot at about 70 yards. Johnny, "He's only about 36" Bwana, the choice is yours. You might see better, you might not." All my mind kept seeing was that helmet. Bang, 300 gr. TSX on the point of the shoulder, dead Buffalo in about 30-40 yards (although we didn't know until the follow up into the grass.

Boy, that one really has a helmet!
The other one, NitroX's picture, is a really nice one even if the bosses aren't that full. I like the low level picture.
I haven't heared anything about the hair on the ears, but it seems like most old bulls don't have much long hair on the ears. Suppose it has most to do with the type of country they live in. If the general rule holds that the span from ear tip to ear tip on an adult is roughly 30", then both of these bulls would be quite wide indeed!

He looks fully hard, ( maybe the tiniest little triangle still soft in front) but he doesnt look old.

Either way it would be difficult to not shoot him. Like folding a pair of Jacks, you might see something better, but when?

Zim 2013. Late season hunt. Shot him after a half hour stalk around a heard, most of this on our guts, sliding on our backsides or bent double and 150mts of hard running with 5 mins of shooting light left on last day of hunt. Not one day under 42C. At this time it was still over 38C. Noit a big bloke but old and hard won.

Very impressive head, hard boss and all, but no roman nose or bald patches around the eyes.
Certainly lacks the highly desirable "dagga-boy" look, but would make a magnificent shoulder mount!

Breeding paddock assessment probably accurate!
