Far as I know no one has gotten him yet. He favored young impala and left his calling card often when I was there hunting plains game.

Splendid pictures. Congratulations to the dedicated sportsmen who had the opportunity to harvest these majestic cats. Would love to see more trophy leopards. One of my dream hunts is to bag a dandy leopard similar to the one captured on game cam in the picture above.

Bumped into this big old Lion at close quarters in long grass at a carcass of a poached Elephant. Sat for him that night but no show then got him in the morning with a quartering away shot as he got up to leave. Taken with a Westley Richards in .425 Magnum Express on a flood plain of the Lugenda river Niassa Reserve hunting block B.
A classic Lion hunt with www.kambakosafaris.com

For those that feel concerned about the sustainability of Lion hunting, This was a classic example of Sport huntings involvement in the maintaining of their habitat.
This lion (over six years old and an outcast from breeding pride) was apart of a strict quota set by the massive but cash strapped "Niassa Game Reserve" Ecologists to provide a source of income to assist in the running of this wilderness area within a third word country. This "pay and it stays" system has and is being used throughout Africa and other parts of the world with great success. For without an income, the powers that be would be forced to allow Logging, Mining and farming within these huge areas, thus introducing more people into these fragile areas which ultimately would lead to the extinction of the unwanted wildlife (Wildlife in the African language is known as "Nyamma" which means "Bush Meat"). I have been fortunate to visit and work within some of these areas and it is plain to see the positive effects where you only have to travel beyond their boundary's to see the devastation that follows the human fingerprint.

I don't know the age of the leopard other than it being a mature male.
It weighed in at around 193 pounds and a few years ago was number 17 in the SCI record book.
Over the last few years it may have been knocked down a few slots.

Hog Pilot,

You have some very impressive cat trophies there. Congratulations.

How were they hunted? The leopards from a blind? Did it take endless days of sitting?

The liob has quite an impressive mane too. Where was this one from?

The lioness is quite a dirty old girl indeed.

Thanks for posting.

Re: The African Cats Thread! Lion, Leopard and the rest

Hi John,

The lions are both SA cats. Sorry, but I haven't quite pulled off the wild lion hunt just yet. I'm working on it though.

The leopards were both taken in Zim. The smaller on in 08 in the Tuli area. That one came pretty easy. We had cats feeding right away and sat on night 2 & 3. Pretty scary night on night 2 with a cow and calf elephant terrorizing us in the blind from 4 paces in total darkness. My 375 was strapped down on the sticks, my 500NE was in the hands of my friend and PH from SA but loaded with "Lion Loads", and the Zim Ph had his weapon. I was effectively armed with my flashlight as the cow growled, screamed, and kicked dirt on us in the darkness for 10 minutes or so! Got the cat on the 4th night and my ele bull on day 6 leaving 8 days to hang around and relax.

The big leopard was taken this past June 2011, in Makuti. This one was a tough hunt, 14 days. Daylight only. On day 12 at noon, we had no male cats feeding, just a few females. With one bait site remaining to check on the way back to camp, I had just about written off getting a cat. Arriving at the bait, we found it smashed. Checking the trail camera we found a large male had hit around 2:00am and stayed until just before daylight. We built a blind but the PH crushed me by saying that the wind was wrong for an evening sit. Lots of tension as time was running out but I've learned to trust your PH, once you find a good one. My PH was Rich Tabor of Charlton McCallum Safaris and he is one of the best cat men around!

We were in the blind several hours before daylight on day 13, hoping that an early arrival would not spook him off the bait. Long before daylight, we heard him grunt. We listened to him feed on the buffalo leg in total darkness for well over an hour, praying that he would continue until legal shooting light. I was using the Trijicon 3X9, so was able to see him well as shooting light arrived. 1 shot from the #1 in 300H&H with Barnes TTSX 180 grains put him dead under the tree. It was a great hunt and will be a great trophy to remember for the rest of my days.

Cheers,

Todd

Todd,

So you had one leopard relatively easy, without a lot of days, and then one where it took the whole 14 days.

I don't think I could sit in a blind patiently for a long period of days.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: The African Cats Thread! Lion, Leopard and the rest

My cat came in to a predator call and was taken with a 180 grain bullet out of a borrowed Browning 30~06. In ten days of hunting Damaraland I saw eight Cheetahs over three separate events. The cherry on top was then also seeing a female Leopard just sitting by the side of the road. The place was a paradise for plains game so I guess the abundance of predators should not have been a surprise.

Re: The African Cats Thread! Lion, Leopard and the rest

Thanks so much John. I think the lack of Cheetah photos on the net speaks to a few issues. The most obvious, of course, is that the vast majority of Cheetah are taken by Europeans who usually spend more time hunting and less time posting than Americans

.

Sadly, it also speaks to what the prices for Cheetah could be if the USFWS ever allowed US import. I can't help but think it would.be better for the cats if they were priced closer to Leopard than plains game. As it is, ranchers lose too much plains game or cattle to try to recoup it on a low trophy fee and plains game daily rates.

Re: The African Cats Thread! Lion, Leopard and the rest

That is a very legitimate question Mike. I guess my first question to you would be, "Why not?" Does their rarity make it objectionable? Do you not perceive the species as a "sporting" target? I am not at all being defensive but am just genuinely curious and will address possible issues below.

Economically my rationale was and is that if a species pays for itself... then it will persist. I am sure you understand the theory Mike but, for those who perhaps have not given it as much thought, I think the below applies. Particularly in Namibia, if Cheetah (and Leopard for that matter) do not represent a revenue source, then ranchers have a very VERY real and immediate financial incentive to shoot them all in protection of game or cattle that actually DO represent a revenue source. My understanding is that a single adult Cheetah will consume about one Springbok per week. This particular species will not scavenge (or respond to bait, incidentally) but will instead constantly kill fresh game even if it is their own kill that is getting a bit old. Those Springbok (which are probably the lowest cost prey by the way....imagine if the Cheetah were feasting on your Sable calves!) represent over $20,000 per year in theoretically lost revenue to a hunting operation.

Given the above, shooting the occasional Cheetah (or Leopard or Rhino) puts money in people's pockets and offsets the cost of having them around. It might not TOTALLY offset the cost (and I don't think it does even with Leopard in most places) but it at least makes a rancher think twice about shooting them all in one go. As an example, after I had shot the above pictured cat, the tracker and I saw another running in the road a couple days later. The PH just smiled at me, backed off the vehicle accelerator, and said "We won't bother him because I have some Spaniards coming in two weeks". He didn't even want that particular cat stressed much less shot and we had already seen seven Cheetah in the last 8 days so his Spaniards were probably fine either way. I think that obvious behavioral impact represents the power of potential profit.

In my opinion, if enough people hunted Cheetah (and if the USFWS allowed US import) then the price of the species in trophy fee and daily rate terms might increase quite substantially and PERHAPS come to completely (or at least substantially) offset the cost of having them on a property. So, regardless of anything else, I feel that hunting Cheetah contributes to the demand for them and acts as positive pressure on their price....thus aiding conservation.

All the economics aside, hunting Cheetah with a predator call was fun as hell and plenty sporting to my mind. I saw it as something close to Black Bear or Mountain Lion hunting in the US but with a much more alert quarry. As for their rarity, I have happily hunted even rarer species (one that is now increasing in numbers btw) within the confines of a well-defined management plan. I am very proud to continue doing so for all of the above discussed reasons.

Re: The African Cats Thread! Lion, Leopard and the rest

JohnTheGreek, I am not casting any aspersions on you shooting a cheetah as I cast none on Boddington or others shooting a White Rhino. Cheetah are not endangered and if you happen to own a ranch when then are taking too many of your "stock" then I suppose they have to be shot as vermin but I cannot understand shooting one as a "trophy", they are not dangerous and can be adopted as cubs as pets and you can use them for a real sport, "chirk hawking". Google that up and have a look, personally I have a problem with any big cat shooting as they are so noble alive but so scabby in death but at least Lion and Leopard might get you, a cheetah is a bridge too far for me. just my opinion and I do not wish to offend anyone here, best, Mike

JohnTheGreek
(.300 member)
25/07/12 12:36 AM
Re: The African Cats Thread! Lion, Leopard and the rest

No offense taken. As an economist, my motives for hunting are often (at least partially) to generate revenue that benefits a particular species directly. Given that, there are few (if any) animals that I would not hunt if I thought the money was going in the right direction to preserve that species. As hunters we often go after animals that are incredibly elegant and not in the least bit dangerous but I do nonetheless respect your preference to draw a line at Cheetah. Perhaps in spite of this elegance/danger combination, the fun in hunting (for me anyway) is also found in the diverse set of experiences we gather and places we experience in the pursuit of various animals. Cheetah offers that....at least to me.

Best,

John

Re: The African Cats Thread! Lion, Leopard and the rest

Fair comment Sir and there is very little logic in what I have written, it is just a feeling inside so I cannot fault your arguments, best, Mike (p.s. if the Waterloo Cup was still in existence in the UK I would love to enter and when my turn came take my cheetah out to put up against a greyhound, might be interesting )

Re: The African Cats Thread! Lion, Leopard and the rest

Let's face it, there is often very little logic in the way each of us views hunting. For example, I thought I could shoot a giraffe until I was really around them but then I just lost interest. So, to be frank, there is no telling what influences one's preferences. These things are also flexible, of course. Today I can't imagine shooting a Giraffe...tomorrow, who knows.

Re: The African Cats Thread! Lion, Leopard and the rest

I would certainly hunt a wild cheetah if I could, indeed we did once look for one of two or three known to have moved into an area where they weren't wanted.

I would hunt a white rhino too, but prefer to take a black rhino first. Ha ha, of course pigs will fly first too ...
