Great idea with the waterbuck, kudu and warthog threads. Keep posting. I have to scan some old photos to add to some of those threads. But I love BUSHBUCK. Here are a couple of mine. Please add yours! This is the Limpopo Bushbuck I took hunting with Dantri Groenewald (BigFive) of African Bush Safaris in September. The hunting of this bushbuck was a little unique. Shot by using a ground stand on the riverine bush edges of large circular irrigated wheat fields. I was expecting closer shots and was using 300 gr Woodleigh RNSPs in a .375 H&H. We were spotting bushbuck at ranges from 90 metres to well over the other side of the field, about 800 metres. A number of does came out to eat on the fringes of the crop and suddenly a good forty metres out into the field a big blackish buck appeared. While the field looked flat it had depressions and bumps so was deceptive. Animals could appear and reappear and the range was harder to estimate. Estimated the range and took a shot, buck fell over but jumped up and ran into the very thick riverine bush. Damn. The animal required a follow-up in thick bush. Circled around and entered the bush through a game or pig tunnel. No room to manoeuvre in there. Dantri pulled out his handgun just in case. Junior the trackers eyes were wide with the whites showing. Could hear the buck barking occasionally and spotted him moving off. Hard to see in the dark under the top storey of branches. Spotted him again barking at us and hit him again heavily with the .375. Luckily the animal was hit hard enough that he didn't prove a true danger as his spine was damaged by the first shot and his movement was limited. Good exciting stuff. The photos were taken right on or after sunset in thick bush and required the use of a camera flash. Stay tuned for the photo essay and story. Currently scanning the rest of the slides. Here is another shot of the same bushbuck. A very nice chobe bushbuck from Nemba in the Gwayi Valley, taken right on the banks of the Shangaani River. First time it was spotted, got a shot off and completely missed. Very upset, but no blood so didn't have to pay for it. Next afternoon by huge luck bumped back into the same trophy bushbuck and this time did the deed and dropped him. I had trouble on this safari with the Woodleighs not having cannelures (early bullets) and the projectiles moved under recoil in the magazine. My excuse anyway. |

Nitro Great looking bushbuck...and a great story to boot.. I have attached a photo of the infamous "265 yard" buck taken with my .416 Rem. using 400gr A-Frames..while in Zim in 2008.. You can see where the bullet come out on the side showing in the photo as he was quartering towards us in the river bed below.. This one was shot in Zim in 2004--Again I was using my .416 Rem. --but much closer shot--as this was around 130 yds...was taken just as it was getting dark and we were driving back to camp.. Took this one as he was running into the brush along the riverbed---and yes, again, with my .416 Rem. rifle...it was the last day of a 21 day safari in Zim. Never hunted specifically for bushbuck, all these were taken while out hunting other game..agree, they are an awesome looking animal and fun to hunt... |

Nice bucks, guys. I still have to bag a few of these, they have slipped me too many times. |

Zim - April 09. One morning found us with 3 flat tires on "Cherrie" - so while some guys were working out on those, Gordon picked Kasirai to escort us. With our rifles slung over our shoulders, we strolled out of camp. Easy, slow walking brought us above a shallow valley about 30 minutes out of the camp. Suddenly, to our left in a small crossroad, a bunch of baboons took refuge in all directions, leaving a bushbuck that was in the middle of them a bit confused. He managed to jump into nearest thicket and waited patiently. I was already on my knee - safety off - seeing Gordon corking his right ear - still I asked if it was OK. He confirmed, so I took a firm aim. The bushbuck was quartering with his rear toward us with little more of the animal to be seen. So I used my imagination - put my bead where I thought it was supposed to be and let one off. High jump and a kick of the hind legs made us all (except the bushbuck) quite happy. The bushbuck dashed into a dead semi circular run through high grass. Still the follow up was quite exciting and we found it no more than 30m from where it was shot. 9.3x74R, 265gr GS Custom FN solid. |

Below is an old chap we got on the Limpopo in October 2008, we were out looking for bait for a croc, first day on that Safari, we )or I should say Ricus, my PH) spotted him about 60 yds away in a ravine. I was carrying a classic African rifle, a .44 Mag 1894 Marlin !! 1 shot just behind the shoulder, he was quartering away, he jumped about 6 feet in the air and while doing so did a 180 Deg turn, he ran into some thick stuff, we found him about 40 yds further on. There was almost no hair on his neck. best, Mike |

Limpopo Bushbuck taken along the banks of the Limpopo River; northern Limpopo Province of South Africa back in 2002. This is one of my most favorite trophies. Rifle: Ruger M77 Mk II in .30-06 Springfield. Handload: 220 gr Woodleigh round nose at 2460 fps. Photo taken very near the spot where I actually took him: Photo posed later with the Limpopo River in the background: (The opposite shore is Botswana.) Me along the banks of the river: Looking for Bushbuck: Croc sunning on a sandbar: Cheers! -Bob F. |

We had gone down one side of a valley in the morning on our third day of looking for Kudu, and coming back up the other side, it was Michael our Zulu tracker (pictured with me and Alicia) that spotted this Bushbuck standing to our right in some shade at about 100 meters. He set up the sticks and looked at me with his eyes wide and said "Please shoot this one. - No Kudu today!" Glad to be a new member of these forums. Edward |

Here is mine from my July2012 trip to the recently reopened Nuanetsi conservancy in Zimbabwe. I hunted with Alan Shearing of Charlton McCallum Safaris. Rifle is a Mauser M03 in 404J and a shot clip of a little ewe in camp on day2 http://www.youtube.com/embed/UhNpnvOlIBU |

Hendrik Is that a standard stock or a custom stock on the M03? |

Its a factory stock, grade 9 if I recall. M03 is an Awesome rifle, love it in 404J! |

This ram was taken in Mica, not too far out of Hoedspruit in August 2012. The full body mount is a gift for a mate who wanted "something African" for the foyer in his inner city office! Rifle is a .300 Weatherby. This Chobe ram was hunted on the Kana River in Gwayi - August 2009. We stalked dawn and dusk for two weeks when the dagga boys weren't keeping us busy! On the last day I suggested we sit after finding very good spoor at a waterhole in the river bed. We had 7 bushpig come in to drink at 20 yards, then 2 rams came out of the riverine scrub and put on a bit of a show at 220 yards. This fellow looked to be the older of the two, much thicker neck, much nicer pelage, bit shorter in the horn. Again, .300 Weatherby shooting 180gr Woodleigh PP. A Limpopo Bushbuck hunted on a cattle property in Nylstroom in 2006. He was hiding behind a small bush on a grassy flat and made a break for it as we were stalking through the long grass hunting Common Reedbuck late one afternoon. A single shot from the .270 Winchester - 16" on the long side. A beautiful ram. |

The bushbuck that I missed. Hiding too much behind the tree, the arrow creased the bark of the trunk and whizzed away. missed bushbuck |

Thanks aromark In this place along Cabora bassa lake, bushbuck is everywhere and some aren' very shy. At night, you can tread on them. I was looking for an hippo with my 100# bow when this busbuck was spotted. My approach was long and cautious, leaves being very crispy. When so close to the game one is reluctant to show off to shoot. The arrow creased the bark, I would have kicked myself and ever since I regret it badly. A couple of days later I saw a fantastic bushbuck that was staring at us and left when we were at 40m. A pity that we were still looking for hippo on land. But the last day resorting to rifle I bagged my hippo and my croc hippo brain shot croc brain shot |

My Bushbuck. Limpopo 2012 |

I'm glad to see others share my budding bushbuck passion. I finally got one at the begging of the month in the cape. I think I have something like 14 mornings and 12 evenings hunting one before I finally took one with my 450-400. I'm looking to do a short 1 week trip in 2014 targeting multiple bushbucks. It's really all I will focus on on this my 4 trip. My question is where and with who do I go? Are there places with really crazy high concentrations of these animals and decent trophy quality? Any PH that is known to be crazy enough to hunt them for 7 days straight? |

I took this one on the way back to camp with the 450-400. I hit him to far back with the first shot and he barely flinched, the next one took him in the shoulder. Even a cannon in the wrong spot is still in the wrong spot. Eastern Cape 2013. |

I have to apologize for the poor quality of the image, the photograph was taken 30 years ago. Then, as an forest officer in Northern Transvaal I culled a very large number of bushbuck, more than 50 rams plus females. The antelopes had caused a lot of damage to our young trees. http://www.kapstadt.de/schindlers-africa |

I took this 15 incher in the Eastern Cape this year when I took my father for his 70th birthday present. We had stalked an eland and ran into a herd of buff and just simply run out of time. On the way back to the cruiser we started down a little embankment to cross the river stream and this guy broke from about 20 yards, the tracker calmly said shoot, shoot, shoot. Being an obedient client I shot. Hit him a little to far back with the first barrel, the second barle broke his shoulder. It turns out a couple of 400gr .410 Hornady DGX are adequate for a 110lbs bushbuck. |

Another couple of cape bush bucks, my PH just sent these to me. My camera battery died and I never got them until now. |

My brother took this one with my dad. They saw him across a valley and each one wanted the other to try for it. Eventual the PH said he was going to go and collect it without them if they did not decide. My dad won and my brother ended up taking the shot. |

Good photos. Glad you were able to get some sent to you for your memories. I have two bushbucks and would gladly hunt more. They are an antelope that always looks like it has "attitude". |

Headed back to Natal this July for 7 days of hunting. Just bushbucks and maybe a bush pigs on the menu. The last time I brought a Weatherby Ultralight in 338-06 with Barnes TTX 210gr loads. I did this for Nyala and there was the possibility of Eland in the Drakensburg mountains. This time I'm 100% focused on a couple of 17+ inch bushbucks! Not numbers but quality. I'm thinking of bringing my Sako 85 custom from Hill Country Rifle in7mm rem mag. It's dialed in with 145gr Barnes LRX bullets. Are these two hard for 110lbs bushbucks? Should I go with something like a Sierra Game King or maybe a Nosler Partition? It's topped with a Swarovski 2.5-15x44 illuminated scope The other option is my AHR custom CZ in 300 Weatherby loaded with 200gr Nosler Partitions or 190gr Nosler long range Accubonds. This has a 2-12x42 Leupold VX6. Thoughts or recommendations on bullets for these feisty little spiral horns would be appreciated. |

Shot in the old growth bush near Durban with a Chapuis SxS in 9.3x74r at 70m. This one goes a touch over 17 inches. Do I get the broomed horn repaired at the taxidermist? |

A couple of old rams shot in the thorn in the Umkaamas Valey last week. Shot from 350m on the alley wall looking down. The rifle used was a Hill Country Rifle 7mm rem mag on a Sako 85 action. Mounted with a Swarovski 2.5-15x44. |
||||||||
|
|
|||||||
Got these three in the same day walking a narrow little valley, maybe 3 miles long. Shots where under 200m from the bottom of the valley up to the sides. Used the HCR 7mm mag. We say 8 rams that day in the 3 mile stretch. All are older rams, the biggest is right at 15 inches. |
||||||||
|
|
|||||||
First morning ram, we say him from the top of a ridge 700m away and jogged down to within 125m. Took about an hour to relocate him. It's amazing how they hide in the smallest piece of cover and even if you know they are there can't ding them. |
