Winchester 1895 in 9.3x62

I have a Winchester 1895 in .270 Win. (modern reproduction) and I have heard that this rifle can be rebarreled to 9.3x62 ,Has anyone heard of this before and if so what would the pressure levels be compared to the .270 Win.? Thanks

Well they also bought them out in 30.06.
The old one were chambered in .303British,7.62x54R for Russia,30/40 and of course the 405 etc.
As long as there is enough metal left around the chamber.
The lever actions are not noted for their extraction however.

Regards,Shaun.

RLI,

"I have heard that this rifle can be rebarreled to 9.3x62"
This has actually already been done in the last 3 months.

"What would the pressure levels be compared to the .270 Win.?"

Probably a lot less as the .270 Win is one of the HOTTEST "Standard Factory" rounds available
- without checking I think it generates areound 55,000 psi.

You could have the 270 rebored to 9,3x62. The cost would be about 70% that of re-barreling. I can't think of a better caliber for the '95!

I see no problem with such a conversion and I doubt that any action work would be needed to make one feed, but perhaps a little would be required..I would rebarrel as reboring cost just as much or at least the folks I know charge just as much, and you get blessed with a 3 year wait on most rebores.....

I think Ray is correct. When I was contemplating my 411 Hawk on the 95, Fred Zeglin said he didn't feel that there was enough barrel on my 270 to rebore to anything over 35 cal. I guess the rear sight dovetail is cut pretty deep.

For what it's worth.

I have long contimplated a 9.3 in a BLR. Now that I have aquired a Mod 95 in 405 I'm think that it will go on the back burner until I see if the 95 works out.

A better idea would be to redo a .35 Whelen Remington 7600.

Re: Winchester 1895 in 9.3x62

I don't care for the 7600s. I have a 760 carbine in 3006 that I thought about but, while it shoots okay, it is a bit clanky. Too much for a horse rifle I think.

It does make a nice rifle for the pick 'em up truck.

Do Remington still make a .35 Whelen in the 7600, I have thinking of getting one. Thanks

Re: Winchester 1895 in 9.3x62

RLI,

I don't see why this wouldn't be a great idea. The 9.3x62 runs lower pressure than the 270. How much lower I am not sure. I saw a beautiful 95 at Wild West Guns in Anchorage that was a switch barrel, 30-06 and 35 Whelen. I know they have been barreled in everything up to 411 Hawk, so the 9.3x62 would be a great pairing of rifle and cartridge. Mart.

Re: Winchester 1895 in 9.3x62

Mart,
I have aquired a .405Win in a 1895 and the 9.3x62 is on hold for a while but I know of 2 other 1895 that have been converted to 9.3 with no problems and every one is impressed with this combination
