375 H&H 300 gr bullets

I loaded some 300 gr bullets for my 375 with max load in Hornady load book. I haven't shot them yet. Will wait til summer. Has anybody shot any 300 gr bullets loaded to max,
if so what volosity did you get? Was it 2500 2600 ,2640, or 2680. My 375 is a Sako hunter 75.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

I get almost 2,500fps with my .375/06IMP, so I hope it's well over 2,600fps. The smaller '06 case duplicates most factory .375H&H ammo due to being loaded to higher pressure.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

Well it was such a nice day high was 52 degres. I went to the range to find out how fast these 300 gr bullets would go
with max load of imr4350. They went 2648 fps thru my conagraph. I don't think that was to bad I mean after all it is a 375 H&H. There were no flatened primers everything was normal. So now this summer I'll find out how they fly to 200 yds.
I shot those at 100 yds and the group was less than 3/4"
5/8s" more like it.

Oh by the way that load book wasn't Hornady it was Lyman 48th Reloading Handbook. That was my mistake!!

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

Sounds just great for a Nosler-type bullet. That velocity is a bit high for old Hornady RN's, but now see they have interbond 300's that should work just fine.
: Most .375's, if bedded properly, are exceptionally accurate rifles. Back in the 70's I worked on a friend's Sako. It was his 'turkey shoot' & Grizzly rifle after that, rarely printing larger than 3/8" groups.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

I think using that load with the 300 R.N. Hornady { on another form } somebody got it up to 2620 FPS. Thats not to bad for a 300 gr R.N. What I shot was a Serria 300 gr SP.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

I put another scope on to day and sighted it in at 100 yds. I was shooting those flat bace bullets 270 gr. The most fps I could get out of them was 2620 fps. So anyway after sight in I moved the target out to 150 yds and shot a 3 shot group
that measured 1/2"
The scope I put on was 2x7x30mm Leupole. I have a Burris on my 416 2.75x20mm

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

I have a friend with a Stainless. Comp Savage .375 H&H who loads to 2,550/2,600fps with the 270 Hornady SP's. This load shoots bug holes (3/8" groups) in his rifle, and has never failed to anchor a moose where it was standing(or running). As a guide, he's dropped 6 or 7 now, that were previously hit poorly. That bullet, at that velocity seems to be perfect for that job.
: Although very light jacketed (I presume), the Sierra 250gr. BT spitzer is exceptionally accurate in my .375 at 2,700fps. For long range deer or antelope, it might be perfect.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

I have some of those 250 Serria SBTs. I have to load some up and see how they fly out of my Sako 375 H&H.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

I shot some of those 250gr bullets with load out of my Serria load book and they only went 2545. So I found another load for them witch is a max load but they will do 2700 fps.
What load do you use to get 2700 fps with these 250 gr bullets?

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

If it was me I would start off with the recommended starting load, around 5 - 10% below maximum, and not start off with a maximum powder charge as listed. And then build up looking for pressure signs such as flattened or cratered primers, cases head expansion, loose primer pockets, stickyness opening the bolt, shiny marks made by an extractor on the case head etc. A chronograph can be useful as well to monitor what velocity is being achieved.

(assuming you haven't done this)

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

I don't own a .375 H&H Magnum, so defer to Nick Harvey's recommendations which are about right for this cartridge according to those of my friends who do have one.

Uncle Nick's recommended maximum load for the 300gr bullet is 81gr IMR4831 for 2640 fps in a 24-inch barrel.

He doesn't give a load for the 250gr bullet in the loading manual edition I use, but gets just over 2700 fps with several maximum loads for the 270gr bullet. One can therefore deduce that 2700 fps would be easily achievable with the 250-grainer.

All the usual warnings apply, 10% under and work up, etc.

BTW, where do you live, jro45? It does make a difference as to which powders and loading manuals other posters may recommend. Perhaps you could be so kind as to update your profile? I take it from your reference to 52 degrees that it is either somewhere in the US (farenheit) or else Marble Bar! (centigrade)!!

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

jro

Just re-read the posts. The velocity you got with the 300 grainers sounds like a maximum velocity. If the pressure signs are OK even in warm to hot weather and the accuracy stays good as well, I wouldn't try to push it anymore.

That's coming from someone of course who only loads his .375 H&H Mag to 2350 fps with 22 inch (or 23?) barrels.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

Marrakai, I live on the east coast [ DE.] and the weather around here has been in the 52 to 65 degrees while I been testing and tring to get the most out of my 375 Sako shooting 270 and 300 gr bullets. But now its cooling off for a day or two then going back up I hope. You see if things go right me and my partner will be going to Africa in 2007. So I am starting a little early I know. This year we are going back to Canada B. Bear hunting in August.

P.S. I'm Retired and my friend has a Dr degree in teaching.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

Start with 270 loads, or perhaps with Nosler 260gr. loads and go from there. As Nitro says, don't start with maximum loads. Different bullets, even of the same weight, have longer or shorter shanks, thicker or thinner jackets and softer or harder cores, all which are prone to producing greater or less pressures. It is isn't a guessing game.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

Daryl_S, I'm all done testing the 270 gr bullets and the 300 gr bullets. I think they are fast enought where I got them to safely.
How about your 250 gr bullets what is your load? I know I could use the same load I used for the 270 gr bullets. Which is what I did.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

Well, OK - I'll give you my load, but it isn't for the .375 H&H -
: 59.0gr. H4895 with Sierra BT and CCI 250 primer, giving 2,710fps. It is a maximum load in my rifle. That was for my .375/06IMP, 25" barrel, as stated in my first post - NOT the .375H&H. For a deer load in your H&H, you could duplicate my load for around 2,350fps in your larger magnum case.
: I'd suggest you use something like IMR4064 in the 69gr. range and go from there as 4064 is an exceptionally accurate powder in that case.
: The Barnes manual lists their 250gr. standard bare "X" bullet(& solid), which usually developes slightly more pressure & lower velocities than the softer jacketed, lead core ones, going to 2,897fps with IMR4320, 2,872fps with IMR4064 and 2,840fps with H4895. These loads, unlike the ones in my old Hodgdon manual, are loaded on 'modern' pressure equipment to SAMMI max specs.
: When one has loaded ammo for a considerabe length of time, they collect many different reloading manuals. I suggest you buy the Speer and Hornady manuals as minimum purchases - both giving good, much needed information. As well as those, I've also accumulated AccArms, Lyman, Pacific, VitVoui, Nosler, Sierra, Waters, Wolf Publishing Wildcats, Barnes and several issues of the standards back to the early 60's. This is just to show, one should keep adding to one's library.
: The small, yearly magazine-type handbook by Hodgdon is another good, cheap source of data with is updated yearly, showing quite a number of wildcats and the newest factory rounds as well.

Although my Merkel was regulated with 300 grainers, it will drive tacks with the 270 barnes TXS.

Re: 375 H&H 300 gr bullets

Daryl_s, Thanks for your load I guess I can't use it unless I go backwards.
I've been reloading for close to 45 years and have alot of reloading books. I reference them quite often when a queston
comes to mind. Sometimes I post that queston to see how different people would handle it.
What I've loaded should do what I want 2700 with the 250.
I used the same load I loaded with the 300 Serria B.T. It is
81 gr of IMR 4350. There is another guy on the web has his own web sight and shows loads for all calibers except the real big bores. His sight says 82.5 is max for the 375 H&H
shooting the 250gr bullets. I wouldn't go that high tho.
I figure If 81gr can get the 300gr bullet up to 2648 it should get a 250gr bullet up to 2700 fps.

BTW - Hornady now has bonded 300gr. RN's for only $1.00 over the cost of the interlocks.(WholesaleSports Alberta)
: I am thinking this is going to become my favourite bullet in my .375 for all-round use.

Sounds good Daryl_S I have some of those Hornady 300gr SPBT bullets. I think I'll load them first. Then get some of those bonded bullets 300 gr.
