I use a 8x57 here in Australia. My rifle is a military Mauser Verguerio. Very good for pigs and donkeys. I have yet to buy dies for mine, but when I do I'll load up with bullets in the heavier side of things (196-220gr). Bakes |

Whatever the .30-06 can do the 8x57mmS will do also. |

Educational post, to me anyway. I have seen few of these around in beautiful German Sporters over the year. Half octagon barrels, full length ribs, engraved etc. etc. for very reasonable prices. Usually in the US$700-900 range when the same in 30-06 would be US$1200 or up. I have always passed because of I what I viewed as an underpowered, in comparison, hunting cartridge. The 270 is quite snappy, the 7x57 is less so. I assumed that the 8x57 would be a bit doggy. Live and learn. Now that I will keep my eyes open I will probably never see another. |

Mickey Did you use 7x57 factory ammo? If so you would have found the cartridge in factory form is under-loaded. To be able to be shot in old weaker falling block rifles in 7x57. The 8x57 vs a .30-06 - it will have a slightly more curved trajectory as the 57mm case is smaller, but the .323 bullet has less friction than a .308 but of course also a lesser section density for the same bullet weight. BUT for practical hunting purposes no difference. For obvious reasons it is a popular round in Europe. |

I'm about to buy a BRNO 98/22 or VZ24 in 8mm Mauser. I'm pretty sure most of the people around here have never even heard of such a round |

I'm sure this will make you 8mm guys happy. Remington choose to make there 700 Classic this year in 8mm x 57 http://www.remington.com/firearms/centerfire/700classic.htm I really like the looks of the 700 Classic but I wish they would do it in 270 win or 35 Whelen. Later mcb |

I think it would be a good rifle to get. Lots of cheap mil ammo to shoot in it too. |

I got mine now! I was looking at rough looking czech mausers at a gun show, and a guy taps me on the shoulder and has a reblued and refinished stock (not shiny arsonal refinish either) turkish mauser. Bought it off his shoulder for 100 bucks. Turk T38, K Kale, 1940. Has a German bolt in it. Bore looks brand new. I think I'm going to get this stock for it, and maybe put a Mojo ghost ring rear sight on it. http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/265749 Or I might shoot it for a while and sell it at another gun show and get a BRNO made one. Of course then I'd need to reblue it as well as restock it. |

I have a hunting lease buddy that uses one. It's a VZ24 that was sporterized back in the sixty's, I think. (Not one of the new crop) It is quite accurate, he prefers to neck shoot deer, and does very well with the rather anemic Rem factory fodder. Being a Mauser fanatic, I've tried to talk him out of it on several occasions, but the best I've done he's promised to "will" it to me... |

sometime back in the 50s my grandfather got his hands on and sporterized an 8mm Mauser 98... well, due to bullet selection, he turned it into a 30-06, and I'm picking up another 98 in 35 whelen, so we've framed the original chambering quite nicely. if I were to find one today, I'd leave it in 8mm, I can actually get 8mm Mauser ammo at the store and for most of the hunting we do around here, it is more than adequate. now if Hornday would load an LM for it, that would be bad-ass. |

In reply to: The Krauts got nearly 2900 fps from 155 grainers back in 1905. That was probably measured from the ~29 inch barrels, but still nothing to sneeze at, even today. |

nosler still lists a 200gr at approaching 2700, not too shabby at all... SD and BC very similar to a 250gr .358cal. (from the nosler reloading manual #5) funny, they list teh "8mm-06" as being a good bunch slower than the 8x57JS... wierd. |
||||||||

I think your pushing the string when you get 2700 out of a 8mm with a 200 gr. bullet...the bestI got was about 2500 with the Noslers and that was warm..but that is a good killer for about anything. I have shot some game with the 160 gr. GS HP and it sure is a killer on deer and elk...I have shot a buff or three with the 8x57 and a sack of military ball that went off about every third round, it was that or stay home with the wimmen! And I survived better than the buffalo. I also shot the 250 gr. Woodliegh a bit and it killed pretty good on Kudu in the bush, but left a bit to be desired in the velocity catagory..As I recall I only got about 1900 out of it... Anyway I sold my 8x57s as the 30-06 is a better round or that was my thinking...but if I adhere to that I would have to sell all my guns because the 30-06 will do it all anyway!! |

mcb, Remington did chamber the 700 Classic in 35 Whalen about 10 years ago, and I got one pronto! It is a good rifle in a great caliber. I am still looking for one in 300 H&H, but don't know why. I have an old 721 in 300 H&H with the correct 26" barrel...a tack driver! Oh...we are talking 8x57...I use its older brother, the 8x57jr in drillings and O/U combo guns. Even at the reduced velocities of the JR, it is a great bushveldt caliber. I recently pried a drilling in 12/12/8x57jrs away from Lee LeBas of L&L. It takes the .323 bullet, and I got it for N. America hunting in closer type conditions and for African bushveldt. The 8x57js is a great old caliber that still holds its own with any 250 yard caliber. With the very good bullets out now, it is even better than ever. |

Ray, I'll check that figure when I get home... that does sound awfully fast for a 200. I actually have most of a box of 180gr semi-spitzers from the 50s left from when our 30-06 was still 8mm... beats me where I put them, but they are in there somewhere. |
||||||||
|
|

sorry, forgot to check it... will try to get that done today! |

checked again... 2698fps... 24" barrel and all though. |
