Winchester Model 1873 - The Gun That Won The West

Talk of Ruger bringing back the Marlin 1895 made me think of my Winchester Model 1873.

I'm the proud owner of a splendid Winchester M1873 chambered in .38-40. I bought it back in March of this year. Here's a crappy phone picture of it taken on April 5, 2021 at my shooting bench. This was my first time shooting the rifle.

Here's a 50 yard target I shot that day:

My rifle was made in 1891 and remains in excellent condition. It really does shoot well. I haven't tried one of the Italian copies, but I'm glad they are being made.

Please, those of you who have a Winchester 1873, whether it be original or Italian, post photos on this thread. Let this be

"THE OFFICIAL MODEL 1873 THREAD."

That is nice and just under 1 5/8" is good accuracy as well.

You'll have to supply 'the load' Cap!
Very nice specimen to say the least, no wonder you're as happy as a pig in poo!
Making Daryl very green with envy, let alone wanting to shoot it!
Amazing find.

Cool looking rifle..

One of the local shops had a new one in 45 Colt for a couple of months.. this model actually.. decided to go in and get it, was gone... but they are still available.. older models like originally posted are obviously much much more desirable..

Even though a restocked butt stock, that is a low price for what appears to be in such nice condition - in .32/20, I assume.

I would say the stock is vintage probably done when the rifle was imported to finland long before WW 1

yes, they were available around the world then

Re: Winchester Model 1873 - The Gun That Won The West

As much as the Browning parents guns are stronger, the 1873 Winchester with octagon barrel simply is the most graceful looking Winchester. I had a nice one from 1888 in .44cal back in the early 90s.
If I should have a leveraction again it would be a repro ‘73. The gun that won the west(..along with all the othersLOL)

Ripp those are amazing, 3 different models & .38/357, .44-40 & .45 Colt. That last one would make a good companion piece to the Ruger BH in .45 Colt.

I just noticed the Carbine is ONLY $1,399.00

Well, I would trade my '76 in .50/95 for one of them.LOL

.

Is .45 Colt and .45 Long Colt the same?

I was told the original 1873s were not chambered in .45 Colt. Is this correct? Doesn't matter to me. A lever action and revolver in the same cartridge would be cool.

Yes, In modern vocabulary usage they are the same cartridge. The term "Long Colt" was an expression that individuals used to differentiate between the .45 Colt and the .45 Schofield as both the cartridges were in common use at the time. Both would fit in the Colt Peacemaker….the "Long Colt", as they dubbed it, would not fit in the Schofield revolver.

The original 1873 was not chambered in .45 Colt, mostly due to the very small rim on those original cartridges. There was simply not enough rim for the extractor to reliably hold on to.

Re: Winchester Model 1873 - The Gun That Won The West

From your "crappy phone picture", (that would be a GOOD picture for me, taken with anything!!), that is a nice looking '73. My first '73, an original in the same cartridge, did not shoot like that but, the barrel looked like a sewer pipe. Good shooting! I parted with it not long after I bought it.

I've had two Italian 73's, both in 44-40 and both were/are good shooters. My first one back in the 90's was accompanied by an Uberti 44-40 SAA clone. My second, purchased a few years ago, is graced with an Uberti Schofield in 44-40. It's a good and pretty accurate revolver but I believe the Colt clone would shade it.

Mike is correct about the rim of the original 45 Colt being too narrow. Uberti's modern Schofield will chamber the 45 Colt as they dispensed with the fouling shield and lengthened the cylinder. That's all good and well except it makes shooting BP loads a pain because they foul out so quickly....so I'm told. I love to shoot BP but I took their word for it.
