A .30/30 Is All You Need (If You Know How to Hunt)

A .30/30 Is All You Need (If You Know How to Hunt)

The all-but-forgotten .30/30 outperforms the .308 and .30/06 at 100 yards. If you like getting close to game animals, it's all you'll ever need

Ripp, thanks for posting.
......."Outperforms"??? .....I guess writers gotta fill pages with something; good, bad, or indifferent.

Re: A .30/30 Is All You Need (If You Know How to Hunt)

It's a "forgotten" shell by most hunters below the age of 55 today, but there are millions of them still used by those that know how to use them and they work as well today as they did 100 years ago.
I killed one of my deer with a marlin 36 24" rifle with a peep sight last season. 217 years and the deer dropped at the shot.

What's wrong with that?

I think its a very nice cartridge for break top rifles. I have seen a few drillings in 30-30.

+1 with me as well ........ but never the less, the Good Old .30/30 like the Gooder Older .303 Brit, were way ahead of their time, with their ballistics .........
And with good bullet placement (and quality bullets), the animals can't tell the difference.

The .30-30 started off as a 1,960fps round with a 160gr. bullet, iirc.
Still, no flies on it. It is indeed, much better today & very close to the 8x57 Mauser as that one is loaded in the USA by Winchester and Remington. I am not sure about Federal's 8mm Mauser loadings.

Re: A .30/30 Is All You Need (If You Know How to Hunt)

Ripp,

Nice article. Thanks for posting. While I don't believe a 30WCF is really better than a 308W or 30/06, I think the 30 WCF (& similar cartridges) are good 150 - 200 yd cartridges for people that know how to shoot and how to hunt. They have killed a lot of deer.

Come to think about it, I had two instances in which bullets from my 308 blew up of deer that I shot at 20 yds or so. I think a slower moving 150 gr bullet from a 30WCF would have penetrated better and been less destructive.

Of course, the 30WCF isn't the latest and "greatest", some of which will be a footnote in years to come.

A .303 outshoots any and all .30-30s every day of the year.

There is a reason the .303 British won the Poms a global Empire while the .30-30 was used by inbred red neck sister loving drunken hill billies ....

PS Imagine if one had a .30-30 AND a .45/70, one would not need anything else!!!!!

LOL - the .303 Brit factory ammo REALLY outshines the 8x57 US made ammo as well.

LOL! Love it! and LOL! Again!

Further to this, last year a few of us went on a multi-4WD drive into the bush to the South of Canberra.
We pulled up for a scenic break and a brew-up, and after a while when all the chat quitened down, I mentioned "I think I can hear a Banjo playing", which got a laugh out of everybody!
We were in a remote area, with a reputation, for some of the above mentioned "activities".

I didn't include the pig hunping as pigs generally have more good taste!

Ha ha. Seriously I would not mind a nice slim lightweight Win M94 ever action carbeen in 30-30. Probably never will get one though.

My only time coming across one, was in true pig humping red neck country, the wilds of the Kymberley in Northern Western Australia. Where the local coppers were all the bad seeds of the state sent up there to get them to resign or put them out bush as far away as possible. Well that was the opinion of my friend of a friend's serial petty criminal minded mate up there. When we arrived at the end of the Easter long weekend, a group of the local dudes had been busy tattooing themselves with a needle and black ink. Big cross on the chest, or GUMP written acorss one's fingers ... classly stuff! Had been smoking wackie weed all Weekend camped by a billabong.

Back tot he thirty thirty. My mate's mate's father up there had one and said that rifle had "saved him thousands of dollars in beef". No I thought, going out bush to the cattle stations and STEALING a cow by shooting one for beef saved him thousands of dollars ....

Re: A .30/30 Is All You Need (If You Know How to Hunt)

Actually reading the article ...

You know it is going to be a really intelligent one, when the first line is ...

Quote:

The all-but-forgotten .30/30 outperforms the .308 and .30/06 at 100 yards

Ha ha ha.

Quote:

your typical 150-grain .308 Winchester hunting bullet penetrates about 19 inches and deforms to a frontal diameter of around 0.55 inch. The same conventionally designed but heavier 180-grain bullet from a .30/06 will push to around 22 inches and expand a little wider, to about .6 of an inch.

But there’s a better .30-caliber option. There is a 150-grain hunting bullet that at 100 yards will penetrate at least 23 inches and expand as much or more than either with similar bullets.

WOW! Rifles firing at a higher velocity, with bullets at the same sectional density or greater and probably better bullet construction pentrate less .... I can see DickMann is going to be a genius writer ...

I think ol'DickMann ia one of these "slower is better" ones ...

Who is this miracle writer?
