My Anschutz looks very similar to that rifle, even the stock is somewhat similar.
The older BRNO's are very nice and the new CZ's just about the same.
I have a 1962 BRNO Semi-auto, quite a nice rifle too.
It loves Browning 40gr. HP's listed at 1,445fps.
It does just fine with WW 36gr. Power Points as well.

My CZ 452M in .22 Magnum and my Anschutz 1450 (I think it is).

My Grandfather's Mauser M410 Light Sporter.

I would buy a new CZ with the schnabel stock again no problem.

Have several CZ's in various calibers.. very nice shooting rifles..

I know I will be rebuked for this, but my truck gun I normally have on me for gophers is a custom Ruger 10/22--has a custom barrel, trigger, stock .. and shoots very tiny groups.. have a 25 group mag on it.. shoots thousands of gophers per year with that thing.. actually put a new barrel on it last year.. Even with the ammo shortage, I have enough 22 rimfire to last me several years..

Mine has a Butler Creek steel barrel .920" fluted.
I JB'd the bore, about 30 strokes. Volquartson trigger & parts.
Won a BR contest with it using Winchester Dynapoint 1080fps stuff. 5 group agg. on one 6-bull target was .222". Range 50 yards.
It is the most accurate .22 I own, the BRNO semi, the nicest, then the Anny.

CZ 452 is the only 22 I have
I took it out a couple of days ago after we checked the stock water and got 5 rabbits for 5 shots
I've been told by senior management {wife } to get rid of those bloody rabbits so I'll give them a touch up this evening

Thank You rpeck, for starting a post on the often overlooked, Rimfire rifles in our lives.

I totally agree with you all, regarding Brno and CZ made rimfires, they are The Best!
I am lucky to own a Brno Model 1 (1951), a CZ 452(2003) and a CZ 453 (Year?, in 17HMR).
They all shoot but the two 452's, easily out shoot the Model 1.

I have worked on a lot of Brno Model 2's over the years, and consider them all (Model 1, 2, 5 and CZ 452's), to be one of the few rimfires, that were designed and built like a Centrefire rifle.

I got the Missus many years ago a Stirling Model 20 for around the house, it was a semi-auto, it worked a bloody treat & did everything that it needed to do with aplomb! Yes it was what you would call a 'truck gun' or the old dependable rifle that was kept behind the door in case it was needed; it was a great little gun & more than accurate enough with open sights (my eyes were pretty good then).
Then of course came Mr Howard & took that one away (amongst others), I couldn't get a Brno (preferably a No2) at the time so I urgently got a Norinco Chinese knock off of the No1.
It does the job okay, gets wallabies easily & all the kids & a lot of their friends have used it to learn how to shoot; true it definitely is no Brno, far from it! Its a tool to be used, but not to be abused. It gets the same treatment as all my other firearms; would I wince if I scratched the stock compared to my good P14 - not on your Nellie!
So no it doesn't really have to be a fancy rig, in fact I learnt to shoot with a Winchester Model 1900 old single shot a a young lad- now that WAS a field rifle!

When these Norinco JW-15 copies came to the USA, I ought a couple of them for a princely sum of $60 each.
Gave one to my brother in law and kept one for myself. Surprisingly accurate and reliable. My son has it now and uses it as a utility .22 for vernim and such.

This really is a good post..agree,,thank you for starting this..

Betting most on here started shooting anything of significance with a 22 rimfire.. frankly have had many that are my favorite.. Winchesters and Remingtons back in the 60's and 70's while a kid on the farm...have several of those I have restored..all bolts..Now have picked up a few pump models and the old nylon Rem model 66... what a great shooter that was..

As Daryl has indicated, Anschutz makes some incredible shooting rimfires as well..have a few of those.. also incredibly accurate..

I prefer my BRNO auto over all the others. I did have a BRNO .22LR - the Model 2, I think it was. It was a fine rifle, but I prefer the Anny to it as well. It has never malfunctioned with any of the ammo I've put through it - low standard velocity and the higher stepping ones too.
Only thing I don't like about it, there is no bolt hold open function - that's about it. I always count rounds - automatically so there is no dry firing going on.

Nice group, Curly. I used a model 52 Winchester, the match rifle from the '50's a the WPFGames in 1989. It was a "Standard Rifle" competition, 3-postion at 50 yards (or meters?). Our Corrections team won the gold, Keith on my team got another gold for high score & I got the silver for second highest score. I think there were 7 or 8 4-man teams, from around the world. Those M52 Winchesters give up nothing in the accuracy game.
During the practice the day before the matches, an Aussie asked me if I'd trade him my Federal 36gr. HP ammo, brick for brick for his Lapua Match ammo. Now, the 52 shot really well with the Federal stuff, but came alive with that Lapua match ammo.
I only dropped 12 points in offhand, 3 in kneeling and 1 in prone.
The 10 on that target is 1/10" wide, with the rest of the scoring rings running 1/8".
It was a metallic sight contest, so everyone was using double apertures.
LOL - I could see in those days.
Keith beat me by 2 points.

My takedown Gevarm semi auto carbine is a good field 22RF. Handles high velocity and sub-sonic ammo with aplomb. Fires on an open bolt and is surprisingly accurate despite this so called "handicap". There is no extractor or firing pin to break, just a raised ridge across the bolt face which crushes the cartridge rim diagonally across the head of the case as it drives a cartridge from the magazine and slams it into battery. This one has taken a lot of small game over a few decades of hunting.

I think the very best Brno .22 is the Brno Model 5. This one has been useful for decades on ground squirrels, grouse, magpies, weasels, skunks, feral cats, and even a few coyotes.

My Grandfather had one of these.. got to use it once I was in the 8th grade.. shot very very well..open sights..

Probably not the accuracy of bolts, but there were literally hundreds of gophers on the farm that hated it..

I had a second cousin on my Dad's side of the family who had one of those model 1890 Winchesters(VERY similar to 1906), in wonderful shape that was chambered in .22 WRF. WRF's weren't available to us so we tested then found it shot really well with W9inchester .22 WMR's with 40gr. HP. The rifle did not seem to mind one bit. Very fast firing and quite accurate.

The BRNO's are a very good .22 and hard to beat for accuracy, longevity and style.

I had dads old Browning take down semi auto 22. Not the most accurate but dad could still head shoot rabbits at 50 and chest shoot at 70 yards with it until he passed. Howard stole that and I replaced it with a JW15 then got a BRNO 1. The JW15 shot better than the BRNO. I still have the JW15 but the guide rails are wearing, this would not happen with a BRNO. May have to start looking for another one.

Most accurate .22 I have ever seen was a shitty dirt cheap Sterling bolt action from the Philippines. 4 or 5 different lots of ammo, 10 shits into a thumb nail at 50 yards. I tried to buy it from the bloke but , rightly, he would not sell. I would wager that was not a 1 in 1000 job more like a 1 in a million.

Meant to say, I also had a Rem pump 22. Now that was a good shooter but it was very long and cumbersome.

I should have added the Remington Nylon 66. Probably the most reliable semi auto 22 ever made, not to mention accurate.

Brno Model 5s. Two from 1958 and two from 1966.

Scopes are older model Swarovski and Schmidt & Bender.

Peep sight is Parker-Hale (England.) Clamps to dovetail. No drilling.
It swings to the side for bolt removal and scope mounting.

CZ factory scope mounts. Walnut stocks.

In the first picture, the two that are in front are the later ones from 1966. They have a straighter, wider and thicker buttplate. The earlier pair from 1958 have the curved tapered buttplates and polished receivers. The later pair have a matte finish on their receivers, with only the barrels polished. The Parker-Hale peep sight is marked "Parker-Hale Made in England PH16N." It appeared in the old Parker-Hale catalogues. One of their "Sportarget" series, this model PH16N was specifically intended for Brno .22 rifles.
