Very interesting indeed. Quite the low MSRP at $659.00 US. and in 6 Creedmoor, .308 and .30/06.

Ripp,
The new Savage is a very nice looking rifle with interesting features. I believe Colt or Sauer has a rifle that also used ball bearings to lock the bolt.
Thanks for sharing.

Re: Savage's NEW straight pull rifle--Impulse Big Game

With any luck it will shoot as good as Savages normally do. I do not like the fact it has a 20MOA rail built into it. I don't do long range shooting so that is a hindrance to me.

Ball bearings as locking lugs I am not keen on but the H&K 770? semi autos had them I believe and they were very reliable. Mind you they worked on a delayed blow back system.

If the ball bearing recesses get plugged with dirt, snow, etc., will that lock the firing pin, or do you eat the bolt?

The bolt doesn’t go into battery if the balls cannot engage the extension.

That "new" Savage ball lockup is merely a copy of the well-known and long established Heym SR30 action! See

Re: Savage's NEW straight pull rifle--Impulse Big Game

Very similar, but I thought the Savage used pressure from the front against a moveable bolt head to engage the bearings,
not the bolt handle itself. Thus, with the Savage, the more bolt trust, the tighter or more pressure there would be against
the bearings. Not sure about that as I then cannot explain how the pressure on the bearings is released to allow the bolt
to be retracted.
Perhaps the systems are the same, afterall.

Re: Savage's NEW straight pull rifle--Impulse Big Game

Found this in the article on shooting it.

"I wasn’t able to measure groups at the 100-yard line, but the view through the spotting scope confirmed that my 8.8-pound Impulse rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, and using Hornady’s excellent 140-grain ELD-Match ammunition, had no problem creating clover-leafed five-shot groups. But 100-yard groups are boring and only tell part of the story, so our next stop was a range with steel plates out to 1,400 yards. “Hit...hit...hit!” my spotter shouted out as I went three-for-three on a 3-inch plate at 700 yards. Not bad for a custom rifle with handloads—freaking outstanding for a factory rifle at half the price and shooting factory loads, and also a testament to FTW instructor Doug Prichard’s teaching and wind-calling abilities."

Sounds like it might shoot!!

Funny how things change....when I was a kid Savage was not considered a very good rifle.. Cheaply made.., poor triggers, not very accurate, etc.. but the last 20 years has really changed that..

The lightweight hunter I purchased and tried out last hunting season would do the same thing as you just described in the article.. it was shooting around .5" groups while cleaning between shots using factory ammo.. however it also has a Proof barrel.. SO..that changes things..

In the last few years I have picked up some rimfire truck guns.. 17HMR, 22 mags .. all Savage and all shoot incredibly well.. minute of gopher is no problem..

Re: Savage's NEW straight pull rifle--Impulse Big Game

Ripp, You are right. 20 years ago, Savage was a poor cousin to Ruger but remember, when Arthur Savage started the company, it made top notch guns. I love my 1899 TDs in 2520/3000 and 22 IMP.

Nice video on their new rifle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adG2ojoXjMo and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFLPjQeMWUw

I think your time perspective is out. Try 30 years ago. The 110 series a mate had out shot every other rifle I knew. When I truly woke up to how good they were I tried to find one in 300RUM to make my 358/338RUM but not one was to be had on the second hand market so went with a Remington instead. That is a Rem made M17

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks for sharing Ripp.

I haven't read all of the above posts, but the "New" Savage, appears to be a copy of, or variation on, the Heym SR30 concept?
Which I believe, are both variations of, the German Military, MG 34/MG 42 action system.

Regardless, it is nice to see a US company, having a go at making and marketing, something a bit different.

Doh!

The more I look at and read about them the more I like them but 2 features ensure I wont be buying any. The 20MOA rail and the single stack magazine. Both big fails in my book.

It seems every gun mag is getting in on the action of printing an article on this rifle..
https://www.petersenshunting.com/editorial/review-savage-impulse/387475

Agree, for my tastes, I'd actually like to get one in 30-06..think it would make a great deer/elk/bear all around rifle.. the single stack doesn't bother me..but I certainly don't need the 20MOA rail... with its addition its somewhat clear as to the audience they are going after...Long distance shooting is still one of the fastest growing shooting sports in the US..

I read the other day the 6.5 CM has taken over as most popular cartridge of 2020.. have not checked out the accuracy of that article

Re: Savage's NEW straight pull rifle--Impulse Big Game

Well the Retail price in Aust. is around the $2,300 mark. Can't see many selling here at that price especially with a long range Pic rail built into it. For most, like about 99% of hunters and shooters that will mean using about 18 to 20 MOA of adjustment to get it near where they want.
