Red or black pad on a ZKK600???

Gentlemen.
The last year I have spent some time customising a ZKK 600 and it's time to fit a recoil pad on the stock. But I'm having a hard time to decide on if to use a red rubber pad or make a black leather one.

I f##k up every time I post pics here so I'm sorry to say that I can't show you pictures of the stock. Let's just say that it's kinda classic looking with decent wood, and both ebony foreend tip and grip cap.

Your opinion please?

Re: Red or black pad on a ZKK600???

I had a black Pachmayr on my ZKK600 which had some really nice wood, photo below. Was the skeet model pad with a black plastic insert at the top to prevent catching on clothes when the gun was mounted. The black pad set off the wood nicely which had a reddish orange tinge where I don't think a red pad would have suited so well.

I prefer the red but either will look good.

I have always preferred red, just seems a bit more classic/classy.

Definitely a red pad, but covered with brown leather.

Black for a rubber buttplate, like the one illustrated, red for anything thicker.

If the rifle is made in classic style when restcoked a red or 'orange' buttpad.

Working on it. But it's taking some time. The weather is too good to spent time indoors these days.

Re: Red or black pad on a ZKK600???

We had rain the other night and I found time for a few hours in my work shop.

Well gentlemen. This is how it looks as we speak.

It looks kinda ok but I think I will make a black leather pad too, just to be sure.
But not today. And not tomorrow.
I feel for some more sanding now, then a few layers of oil, then some work on the metal, before putting it all together and test shoot the rifle.

You are where you need to be on the pad. Proceed with the finish. Love ZKKs - what is it chambered in?

Yes once the oil goes on it will enhance the look of the pad, but of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I am biased of course, I think red just looks classy

Thanks for taking time to share your opinions guys.

John. This rifle is chambered in the good old and very versatile 30-06. For me a classic cartridge I just love.

You must post some more pictures when you finish the stock. '06 is a wonderful caliber - on any continent! One of my "go to" rifles is a ZG47 in '06. Anything with Brno on it interest me!

Thanks for posting.

Re: Red or black pad on a ZKK600???

Gentlemen.
Thank you for your time and your reply. I really appreciate it.

I will try to post a few pics from the start of this project and a few of the progress.

It all started just over a year ago when I felt for something to spend cold winter nights with.
I bought a couple of blanks from Turkey and after some hard thinking about what I wanted I felt brave enough to start.

The blank (the one to left) was cut roughly.

The outside shaping was done with rasps mostly.
Im sorry to say that I didn't think too much about to take pictures during this process, something I regret today.
Anyways, here are a couple of pics of the rough rasped filed and sanded stock ready for the final adjutments and details.

Water was used to show the grain in the wood.

The forearm was cut to what I felt was right and a piece of ebony was mounted and roughly shaped.

This rifle is chambered in 30-06 "only" but to be on the safe side I have mounted steel crossbolts and covered the holes with ebony plugs.

I made a grip cap in ebony too but the only picture I got of it is this one

This is how the rifle looked like at that stage.

Working on this made me a little curious of how it will look like so I had to stain the stock with water again to show some colors.

The last progress with rhe pad you have already seen.
Now I'll have to do some more minor adjustments and sanding before the first oil.
The metal will be given some care as well, but that's a story I have to come back to later.

Rino.

Re: Red or black pad on a ZKK600???

You did a truly great job on the stock, but I can't do that myself, do you still have the old stock ?

I may have to get one made up to, if I cant find a take off stock .

Rino, that is a nice bit of stick you have. The grain flow in the fore end is good and hard to better through the wrist.

Re: Red or black pad on a ZKK600???

Sorry. Im still battling with pics but will try once more.

Anyways, finally, after a few very hot weeks the temperature is like normal summer and the temperature allows me to spend time in the hobby room again.
After my last session there I have had some very handy visitors and their impressive work on my stock made the temperature rise again. I'm sorry to say but my words contributed more to global warming than a vulcano erupting. Sorry Texas. Now you know the reason for the heat.

After what seems like most of June I managed to calm down and think clear again.
Thinking back I remembered that I have had a few badass hangovers and I survived every time. Nothing can compare with serious hangovers so some minor damage shouldn't stop my project.
So, after a couple of nights with extra work I'm back where I was. Well almost.
Since I had to waterstain again I took a picture outside for fun, and for my memory album.

I also dropped the steel back in just to take a "before oiling" kinda memory pic.

That's all for tonight.
Now it's time for a beer and watch the sundown... And maybe sunrise.
Cheers !

Re: Red or black pad on a ZKK600???

It looks awesome, pity about the marks, not too bad other than that one on the top side, bugger !

If I could be so forward, would the fore end tip not look a bit nicer square off a little ?

Or is my taste not right, the rest is great ?

Seriously - you prefer the tip with the sharp point or whatever that ugly pointy thing is?

Sarg's forend tip is much nicer. No comparison.

Re: Red or black pad on a ZKK600???

What pad did you go with, looks like a Pachmayr Old English Decelerator? I don't think the Pachmayr is set up for plugs to cover the screws so hope you got it so the screw entries don't show.

All looking good so far.

I go for the one already on the stock. looks more in keeping with the period. If anything round it up just a tad shorter but not the modern squared with a point/from projection.

I also like the dogleg bolt on the P14/M17 but this is just me.
