single shot hammer rifle in 6x70R

Gentlemen,

today I had to aquire an original John Rigby single shot hammer rifle with a new equipped barrel in 6x70R.

The 6x70R is a proprietary cartridge of Norma with a very long case (70mm) and a ridiculous small bullet diameter of 6mm.
The reason for this configuration was to reduce the strain on the locking system, so the cartridge pressure was set for 2400 or 2800 bar (90grs Ballistic Tip for about 700 m/s)

I will use this rifle for the oncoming 1st of May, the opening day for the roe deer hunting season.

Any comments will be welcome!

best regards
Rolf

iirc, the 6x70R is a necked down version of the 6,5x70R Bleistiftpatrone - pencil cartridge
service pressure is a little bit over the 6,5

Rolf

I am very interested in seeing how you do on roe deer next month!

We had a discussion here on Nitro Express a few years ago on this neat little cartridge.

See This Thread

Is the Rigby hammer rifle pictured in that thread your rifle?

Which bullets have you tested?
May we please see this rifle and ammunition?
I am looking forward to seeing how the 90gr ballistic tip bullet does on game at the lower-than-fashionable launch speed.
Have you considered the 95gr partition?

Cheers
Tinker

Re: single shot hammer rifle in 6x70R

Hello Tinker,

yes, this is the rifle!

I purchased one box/20 ctgs. of ammunition with the 75grs Reichenberg HDB bullet.
Mr. Hirschle told me that he was not satisfied with the performance of the 90grs Ballistic Tip on roe deer due to the slow velocity, so he ordered custom ammunition with a lighter bullet and more speed.

I can make photos on the rilfe and the ammunition if anyone would assist in importing the pictures into the Forum (in case someone is interested...)

best regards
Rolf

Sounds like a very nice rifle to use on WYOMING antelope Rolf.

But there is a problem.
It's owner has not come to WYOMING to hunt yet...................

(read carefully and think deeply..........and see if there may be a cryptic clue in my post)

Happy hunting Rolf.

Steve I agree!

Rolf in the next couple days I'll try to resurrect my photo hosting account and see if I can post your rifle and ammunition images.

I'll PM you with an email address for you to send them to me.

Cheers

Re: single shot hammer rifle in 6x70R

Never got the set of barrels made by Bailey. Pity, a nice .22 Hornet DR and a set of 6x70R barrels as well would have been nice.

Had a discussion behind the scene at the time with some knowledgeable persons and they reckoned it a good idea to let Bailey make a few more "test" rifles before committing to one. But by then of course, he would not have offered a special price anymore ...

Keen to hear how your 6x70R goes Rolf. Good luck. Nice looking hammer rifle too.
