New 224 Valkyrie from Federal

This looks like an interesting little cartridge, the 224 Valkyrie from Federal. It looks like they avoided or fixed the mistakes Nosler made with their cartridge (like avoiding the rebated rim). This thread is a little hard to follow at times but the round is based off of a shortened and necked down 6.8SPC. Ballistics look really good:

Federal's web site release. Little easier to follow along with picture and video.

Brass.

I wonder how well the FC brass will hold up.

Looks like some good ballistics. Wonder if the round will catch on.

It could catch on as long as there are rifles and/or upper assemblies with proper twist rates of good quality for sub minute accuracy - and a good supply of good brass that doesn't go to hell after a couple trips to the loading bench - and the factory ammunition actually makes the advertised velocities.

I'm interested.
We have target positions well past 1000 yards here on our personal range. I enjoy working in the wind. If this thing is really up to snuff it could be a great long range cartridge for the kids.

Re: New 224 Valkyrie from Federal

Interestingly, I got an email from Starline this week announcing they are making 6.8SPC brass now. I’ve only used SSA brass for that caliber (haven’t loaded or shot any in a few years) but they got bought out by Nosler if I remember correctly.

This thing just screams for a build using a Proof Research barrel, say 20-24”. I would also be interested in seeing if any 5.56 suppressors will be rated for it with longer barrels.
