Scout rifle?
|
So I have another hankering for a scout rifle.
I had a Win Big Bore 356 Win and a Marlin 336 35 Rem set up with scout scopes but I did not use them for anything and they both left the vault years ago.
I read a couple of things on scout rifle and I think I want one again. Anyone have any experience with this design.
My initial thought was to have someone build me one on a Ruger mini 14, but that is not really traditional.

Due to the Butler-Creek, Beuhler or some other outfit (starting with B, I think) scope base that fits in a 6.5x55 rear sight base, a model 96 Mauser in 6.5x55, or 8x57 might make up a scout-type rifle, however, would only be a 5 shot, but use stripper clips, etc.

I have a "scout" made from a VZ Mauser with a 19" 30-06 barrel in it. It's something I threw together over 30 years ago. I shortened the military stock and did a carving on it, and I glued a cheek piece to it so the stock works well with the Burris scout scope.
So far I have fired 13 shots at 13 head of game and I have killed 13. I have not misses a shot or wounded an animal with it. With a track record like that, it's very hard to dislike the little thing, for any reason.
The only thing I intended to do (that I never got around to) is mounting a Williams peep on it with a front base and steel blade. A "scout" should have a set of good irons, and my doesn't, but so far I have not needed them. I will kick myself if I ever do however.

I think the manufacturer Daryl was trying to remember is B-Square but I think the mounts made by S&K are better.
An easy to build and useful scout rifle can be had from just about any military bolt rifle, including 1903 Springfield, M91-M98 Mausers, SMLE, etc. Of course those will only give you a rifle in the calibers those were issued in. I know people do it but I wouldn't recommend boring out an old military barrel to a larger caliber. If you want a bigger caliber in a military rifle it's best to rebarrel.
For something both fun and on the cheap why not a Mosin-Nagant?
For a real hoot, you could send a Garand to Shuff's Parkerizing and get a mini-G with an Ultimak rail installed. You can keep the original .30-06 barrel, rebarrel in .308, or even have him make one in .35 Whelen! I have one of his mini-Gs and I love it but I'm a rear scope kind of guy so I didn't go with the Ultimak rail.
Imagine an 8-round .35 Whelen semi-auto scout with a 16.1" barrel. How cool is that?

I sent a mini 30 to these guys and have killed a bunch of hogs etc with it.

That I should who I was thinking of using. Looking at rebarrelling with a fluted SS barrel, mpi stock, and full accuracy job.
Did you rebarrel or accurize?

Here is one I made for a friend on a Springfield in 35 Whelen.
It's his "go-to" elk gun.

If you meant my post, I sent them an old mini 30 with a sheared off stock and told them to give it everything. New barrel, action worked over, adjustable gas block, adjustable trigger, new stock, etc.

I like the scout idea but with a red dot sight. One of the original scout type riles but with out the scope would be the N05 303 Jungle Carbine. This is one handy rifle in close cover and can still be used to 300mts.

The "Scout Rifle" idea with an intermediate eye relief scope mounted forward isn't that new at all. Here is a photo of my Haenel, Suhl 1900 model in 8x57I with it's contemporary Voigtlaender, Brunswick, "Skopar D" 3x scope. This early scope was already obsolete when WW1 started in 1914.

10 years ago I would disagree with the nay-sayers.
Today, as I have aged to a point my eyes are not as sharp I see the criticisms as more valid.
When I made my Mauser/Scout I was in my early 30s. Now I find the scout scope I have doesn't let me see in the dim light as I could when i was in my 30s, 40s and 50s. Last time I took it out I was in black timber and at last shooting light I tried to get on an elk, and could not make it out well, so I held my fire. Even 5 years before I had no problems with such shots in dimmer light. When i was in my late 40s I still has 20/10 vision.
I have mounted some 2X-7X Leupold scout scouts for several customers and they have a larger objective than my old Burris does. Maybe they would be ok in the dimmer light, but not owning one, I can't say.
In good light I find the scout scope to be very fast and easy to use, even with my old eyes, and I love the way the gun carries. It's a bit homely, but handles like a dream and has been a manic-wand for making meat for me for many years.
I expect the scout scope may be a "young mans scope". Maybe not, but that how I have "evolved" over 30 years of using mine.
When I was younger my favorite rifles all had iron sights. I have probably killed 2/3s of my big game in my life with irons, so the scout scope was faster and gathered more light them my eyes, and I could see nothing to gripe about, ------then.
Now the scout can be dim, and the irons on many of my guns are non-existent in dim light. Even peeps don't help me much in the dim light anymore.
I have not found many up-sides to this aging stuff...........
