http://www.dakotaarms.com/model10.html Looked at a couple of these at a shop the other day..they had just gotten two in. One was the deluxe model with incredible wood the other with regular wood but still nice.. Was thinking with it being a single shot and all..what would be the caliber of choice? The ones they had in were 280AI and 260 Rem.. I found them to be fairly light and really well balanced.. If one was going to use it primarily on deer sized game -with maybe an occasional black bear or elk thrown in...-what would be your caliber of choice??? 6.5x55?? Others?? Ripp |

Well, there's always 7x57. Great range of projectile weights and styles, medium recoil in a light-ish rifle, more than enough energy to get the job done out to 350-400m (if you really think you're that good) and above all, a great classic. (and there's a rimmed version available if you need it) Failing that, a .303 (Brit). ps I thought the mannlicher version of the rifle looked pretty cool. |

I think a standard .280Rem./Exp. would work just fine = better than 7x57. How about a .280 Flanged Nitro Express same ballistics as a warm loaded 7x57. 160gr. @ 2,650fps. - page 295 in my newer, 6th Edition COTW .260 makes a nicer bolt gun, I think. The longer case, with long slim bullet & rimmed case - nice! If going shorter, full stocked Mannlicher, then the .260 Rem. for sure. |

7x65R or 300 H&H Flanged. Waidmannsheil. |

I've always thought they're beautiful, and one in .257 Roberts would make a sweet little deer rifle. Obviously not an elk cartridge, but how often would you use it for elk anyway? Maybe a .270 Winchester would work better. Just be sure you don't dry fire a M-10 because you'll break the firing pin. |

Quote: The 6.5x55 in the Schutzen stock would be nice. Otherwise I would go for a "magnum" powered cartridge with a long barrel in such a nice lightweight single shot rifle. Not with a 23 inch barrel though. Doesn't list the cartridges they are actually chambered for. If needing a more standard cartridge chambering I too would go for a classic like a .300 H&H Magnum. If a longer barrel is available, a minimum of 26 inches, and it was available, something like a 7mm STW but it is not a classic. But if I was looking I would go for more crazy choices, such as the 6.5x68, the 7mm Super Express Vom Hofe, the .300 H&H Magnum. The deluxe looks very nice. |

I see they no longer make a takedown. |

G'Day Fella's, Ripp, I would go with a .270Win or 7x57. Just be aware, that you should never dry fire an M10 (without a Snap Cap), as the firing pins tend to break. Not sure if this has been addressed, but... Mind you, after handling the Martin Hagn falling block, single shots, I'm a bit smitten! Doh! Homer |

Quote: It has not been addressed..thank you for sharing.. Yes, I am looking for more of a older type cartridge..almost more for nostalgia and more uncommon type calibers...but we shall see.. The Dakota really pointed well..thought it would be fun to carry and still hunt with through the mountains...we will see...so many guns, so little time.. Ripp |

I love the model 10 but have been leaning towards the Blaser K95 in single shots. The K95 is a takedown and you can switch barrels. The other feature is the cooking safety. I sort of like the idea of carrying the rifle loaded and undocked unti you flip the safely up. Athetetically the Model 10 is a little classier but a K95 with octaganal barrel and sights is quite a looker as well. To many nice rifles! |

Quote: I agree with the cocking safety and swithing barrels..-last year when we went to Spain hunting Ibex, the outfitter had a coupel R8's with Zeiss scopes..I used on in 300 Win for the entire trip..really liked it..so much in fact I bought one when I got back..got a screaming deal on it..have a 300 Win and a 375H&H barrel for it with quick detach scope mounts ..have not even shot it yet...but plan to this spring or whenever the weather warms up a bit... The decocking seems to be really liked or hated..I agree with you and really like it..works really well and is quick... Ripp |

Well for me it wouldn't be in .375H&H, at 7 lbs...that would hurt under full loads! Then again you can always download to say 375 2 1/2 specs? They certainly look the good though - Tough choice mate! |

Yes, I addressed the firing pin breakage issue above. I've noticed many of my posts here are ignored, are they not showing up? I ran into a problem like this on another forum where my posts didn't show up unless I was actually logged on. It was weird. I've also been trying to upload photos with no luck. Is there something funky with my settings or something? |

Quote: With the premium bullets now available, the .257 Bob does quite well on Elk. Not my choice, but a friend's wife uses her BLR in .243 with 85gr. TSX - works a treat - double lungs then exits and they die very quickly. Art - a .303 with a .308 barrel would also be interesting. I barreled and chambered a P-14 up for my buddy with a .308" barrel and he loves it. Initially he wanted to use 220gr. Hornady RN's, but found the barrel is a tack driver with 150gr. Interbond SP's from Hornady. He drives than at 2,750fps and they shoot like match bullets, taking deer, bear, moose and elk for him 2 falls ago. The longest shot was the elk at 415 yards - one shot. Keith is an EXCELLENT shot - and was the gold medal winner in our gold medal team at the WPFGames, 1989. He absolutely revels in long range game shooting - & much like you, he is totally capable. |

I like Daryl's idea of the .303/.308 6.5x57r might be a nice option. Or a .303/6.5mm improved... |

Ripp, Keith says the .308 calibre .303 chambered rifle is quite a fun gun to shoot and has killing power way out of proportion to it's apparent recoil. Since you already have most of the flat shooting high powered "manglums" you'll ever need, a "fun hunting gun", one that is an absolute joy to carry and shoot, might be a pleasant departure from the norm. I always felt 'special' when I was packing my #1 in 7x57. |

Quote: Agree Daryl 100%... which is why I am asking for suggestions..seems I normally gravitate towards the maggglllummms...so would like to have a "pleasant" departure... I will check into this .. the 6.5x55 is on the short list as well... Thank you for the info Ripp |

I like rimmed shells personally for S rifles. No real good reason, because the best extractors will not break, and they work fine, but I like the "rimmed guns" because they seem smoother to me, and there are a lot of the older style shells to choose from. 219 Zipper 225 Win 25-35 Win 7X65R 30-30 Win 30-40 Krag 7.62X54Russian 30R Balser 303 Brit 348 Winchester 9.3X74R 45-70 450-400 450 Nitro 470 Nitro 500 Nitro I believe that this list covers about any game I can think of to hunt. Doesn't make me right and anyone else wrong. It's just what I like. |

If the rifle is ever going to Africa I would stick with readily available calibers. 375 H&H 300 Win mag 308 223 22lr 458 Win mag 416 Rem The 308 looks like a winner! |
