7x57 or something

Guys, I have a Springfield 1903 that I love but for what I want to do, I can't bring myself to drill and tap it. Would like to trade for a nice sporter in one of the following calibers: 7x57, .303 British, any small 6.5, and possibly a .35 of some sort. Would like to find something built on a Mauser action, but would consider an enfield or even carcano action.

Make it into a .35 Whelen - fit a peep off the side or do a side G&H side mount?
Or maybe the 400 Whelen if you want a real challenge?

.400 Whelen IMP would be a better suggestion, 93x64mm.
The IMP case is much easier to work with and has no headspace problems, headspacing being controlled by the .454" (to .460") shoulder very nicely.
I only included the .460" number as that is what my .375/06IMP has, along with a .470" base.
Even though a Mauser action, it operates with as little muscle as my little finger provides on the bolt. snick - snick - 270TSX at 2,650fps.
The .400 Whelen IMP would make an excellent round for that rifle, ihmo.
A side mounted aperture sight, with a round brass or ivory or Sheard gold bead front sight - perfect!

I should have specified what the rifle looks like. It is not original but sits in a nice fajen stock, 22" Barrel with Lyman peep. I have thought about it quite often, and considered the .400 whelen, .338-06, and .358 Norma magnum.
Without stirring up to much trouble lol, does the members here think it wrong to do a .318 WR on this action?

Moderators, move this to the rifle forum if needed. Would it be blasphemous to build the .318 on this action? If anyone has anything that would make this rifle perfect, I would love to hear and perhaps acquire

.338/06 would be OK - .35 Whelen (or Whelen IMP) even better - even super & exactly what Elmer Keith (1903 Spr. in .35 Whelen)used in Alaska - back in the ahhhh - lemme see, maybe 50's?
If that is incorrect as to the rifle used, pls correct me.
Thought it was a Griffen & Howe Model 1903 Springfield in .35 Whelen.
Of course, .318 would be OK as well, just hard to find .330" bullets in the USA, in that they are not THAT common, not like .338's or .358's.

Both Woodleigh and Hawk make .330 bullets but there are also others in the US and around the world make bullets to suit. As far as one of the less common calibers go, the 318 WR is much better supported than the 333 Jeffery in both bullets and barrels. Brass is available from Bertram and Jamison as well as some others when there is enough demand, but can easily be made from 30-06 brass. The purists would puke at the thought of a 318 WR being built on anything than a 98 Mauser but as it is your gun, build whatever you like. It is a super cartridge.

My smith keeps trying to get me to do a whelen on it. I currently do not have a .35 caliber rifle, so would fill a niche for me. My goals for the rifle are fairly heavy (220-350 grain) bullets at between 2500-2800 fps so no need for any real speed. Components that are available even if they are tough at times to get. Load data must be available also. Would like a rifle weighing around 9 lbs.
I am not interested in a long Barrel, something in the 22-24" length would be about perfect for me.
Of interest to me is if any of our members have a front sight, Barrel blank, or any other item that might be willing to part with, I would like to try to acquire it for this project

The end weight is whatever you make it.
That will be governed slightly, of course by the calibre.
A 9 pound rifle is a good weight and will handle anything from a .35 Whelen to a .375Whelen IMP - my favourite. A 9.3x62 is also a great round, almost literally, an improved '06 necked for a .366" bullet. The base diameter is, of course larger on the 9.3x62. Rim size, is the same.
