.300 H+H

Anyone care to suggest some middle of the road loads for my .300 H+H using 180`s and above weight projectiles.
I bet you have one D,or did have?

Sad but true story I have a pre-64 model chambered for the grand old cartridge 300H&H..needs some bolt work as well as the stock is hammered...havn't fixed it to this date but really plan to and take it back to African one day along with the .470 double..think that would make for an awesome arsenal while there..

Re: .300 H+H

Had one long ago - used H570 and H870 exclusively and this data from Hodgon #21 manual
some 250 data from Hodgdon #26 of 1992
The 250gr. old style Barnes did not shoot well in my rifle with H870. I didn't try any others.

180gr.
no start load - only load listed H870 - 90.0gr. - 2,883fps
5010 - 80.0gr. 2,740fps - max - 84.0gr. 2,920fps
old H4831 - 69.0gr. 2,847fps - max - 75.0gr. 3,013fps
H450 - 64.0gr. - 2,793fps - max - 73.0gr. 2,947fps 26" = test bl. 50,100 cup
H414(W760) - 55.0gr. 2,731fps - max - 59.0gr. 2,891fps

200gr.

no start load - only load listed H870 - 88.0gr. - 2,902 fps
5010 - 77.0gr. - 2,600fps - max - 81.0gr. 2,760
no start load - only load listed H570 - 83.0gr. 2,803fps
old H4831 - 67.0gr. 2,740fps - max - 72.0gr. 2,932fps

220gr.

no start load - only load listed - H870 - 88.0gr. 2,891fps
old H4831 - 65.0gr. 2,640fps - max - 70.0gr. 2,714fps
5010 - 70.0gr. 2,300fps - max - 78.0gr. 2,540fps
H-570 - 71.5gr. 2,450fps - max - 83.0gr. 2,684fps
H-450 - 62.5gr. - 2,500fps - max - 67.5gr. 2,700fps

250gr.

H870 - 75.0gr. 2,456fps - max - 79.0gr. 2,616fps
Old H4831 - 63.0gr. 2,372fps - max - 67.0gr. 2,563fps
H4350 - 59.0gr. 2,344fps - max - 62.0gr. 2,493fps

Thats a good start D,knew you would be up for the challenge.
Next is what are the equiv powders in Australia.
I seem to think that my 30 cal mags eat 2209.

Get her going Art!

gryphon,
Here is a link that lists the Hodgdon powders that are made by ADI

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2008/04/hodgdon-and-adi-powder-equivalents/

Hope this helps.

Hi Gryphon,
Here's a link to ADI's site giving powder equivalents for their whole range.

Re: .300 H+H

Gryphon,
I tried different loads of IMR4350 & AR2209 & variations of length for years without success in my .308Norma Magnum (Federal 215 primers & 180gn Hornardys). The Norma Factory loads were consistently about an inch for 3 shots at 100 yards - my loads at least double that! Had an old benchrest guy that regularly did the "Fly" event at 500m, walked past & shook his head! Asked me what powder I used & he just said "try 2213sc", then walked away - so I did!
Groups shrank overnight!
Now it can shoot (If I can hold steady enough) just under MOA with both Hornady 178gn A-Max & 180gn SPBT & to the same POI.
My only problem with the rifle is that it is a bad fouler - it takes a lot to clean!
Try slower if 2209 doesn't work
Cheers

Re: .300 H+H

Mate I have only run 2209 through my 308NM,it shoots, got a 26" barrel and maybe that helps.I have only shot hydros through this one.
My old 308NM ate whatever was fed into her.

But I take that on board about the slower burn.I don`t fuss too much looking for BR accuracy for what I do here in the field.

But the 300 H+H has a pretty good name for accuracy apparently.

Lucky bugger!
My 308NM was the damn fussiest rifle that I've dealt with so far, took years to get right - worth it in the end.
No I'm like you I don't need BR accuracy - but its nice to get a good load though, then if you miss well that was your doing!
Lets hope your 300 Super gets some venison soon mate!

Re: .300 H+H

G'Day Fella's,

Nice one Gryphon, lookin forward to future reports!

Did you see the Miroku/Browning M78/High Wall on Used Guns, in .300 H&H?
I was very tempted......... but.... I was strong!

Yes, iirc, the .300 H&H won and set a few long range target comps, back in its day.
This may have been at the Wimbledon 1000 yard shoot, or where ever in the UK.

Doh!

Re: .300 H+H

G'Day Fella's,

Gryphon, pleased to hear you got a laugh out of that!
But, I just went and had another look on www.usedguns.com.au (so, maybe.......I'm not that Strong after all?), and the Miroku/Browning 78/Highwall was gone! Bugger!

But there was an R/hand AHR http://americanhuntingrifles.com/ brand bolt action, in .300 H&H there.
Asking price is $6,000.00 but has a L/Hand cheek piece. Apparently, many of these rifles are based on CZ 550 actions.

Doh!

Re: .300 H+H

JG,

What is your .300 H&H?

Had a look through some of your posts in the last couple of months in case I had missed what it is ie on a post. Perhaps earlier?

What rifle is your .300 H&H Mag? Just interested. Thanks.

Yes Gryphon, good to see and you and me both!
At those prices, I'd rather get a good Brno 602/CZ 550 and have Ross Waghorn etc, do their magic!

Doh!
