Loctite removal.

I`m asking the guru`s on NE to advise as to what wont kill my blueing but will remove loctite that was under the bases.
I never put it there myself and haven't a clue as to what colour loctite it was.
I have seen a few posts elsewhere but with not much info.

Re: Loctite removal.

Are you sure it was Loctite. If it was Loctite then the colour would still be visible. If it is clear then it was more likely Araldite which is pretty commonly used.

No I`m not sure as to what it is.The remnants could be the Big A as I didnt really notice any def colour. If it is A mate whats the best option to get rid of the shit?

Hi Gryphon,
Some gentle heat from a hot air gun should be all you need. Don't need much heat to remove, certainly not enough to do any damage to the bluing.

Re: Loctite removal.

300 degrees is usually enough to break the bond on the CA's and epoxies.

Re: Loctite removal.

Its not the bond D its the residue that looks like cak.

Re: Loctite removal.

A little heat and easy wipe with 0000 wool should work. You can try the mineral spirits and 0000, or acetone and 0000 as well.
I would try heat and 0000. The heat should convert it to a crumbly consistency. Mineral spirits or Varsol should then remove it with gentle persuasion, aka 0000 wool.

Re: Loctite removal.

Its an un fired custom and with brand new blueing etc and I`m a little hesitant to be more than extremely gentle. If I had done a few bush trips with it I probably would get the sandpaper out ha ha.

Re: Loctite removal.

The 0000 should not harm the bluing 1 iota (maybe 2?). Try it on another barrel or action.

Are you sure it is locktite and not CA? Either can be removed with a little heat - doesn't take much and the steel wool, with or without solvents.

Re: Loctite removal.

G'Day Gryphon,

As mentioned above (Heat gun, 0000 Steel Wool soaked in oil, etc).

Also, what I use, is the handle of an old plastic tooth brush.
I shape it into a chisel point, and then carefully chip off any remaining Loctite.

Hope that helps

Doh!
Homer
