works in progress

.....just a couple of pics of some my never ending list of projects....first is an un-issued Westinghouse Mosin that I am fitting to a highly modified 788 Rem. stock thst will be used as a pattern in a duplicator

....the second is my VZ24 8-06 RCBS that I am restocking with a classic semi-finish stock I bought off Geoff Slee back in the '80s

Re: works in progress

.......thanks Homer....got a bit more done in the last couple of days, getting closer to what I'm after. As I'm about 6'4, 110 kg and my wrist to fingertips is about 8 1/2", I like a fairly chunky stock. My 265 RCBS has a beautiful Gabe Gatti stock but unfortunately my fingers wrap right around the grip

Re: works in progress

Are the wood stocks painted black for reference only?
Would like to get a pantogragh one day - if the boys clean all their crap out of my shed I might have 1/2 a chance!

Re: works in progress

I paint them in grey undercoat mainly because it lets me see the little imperfections easier compared to the multi colours you get with the various fillers and bogs etc. used to get the desired shape.
Using old damaged stocks lets me play with the shapes without destroying a good piece of wood, you can add or remove as much as you like, then by having the blank cut slightly oversize, you stil have plenty of wood left for adjustments.

Quite an involved process.

Re: works in progress

.....not as much as carving one from scratch, but obviously more than a semi inletted unit. I'm hoping to get a few of these down to Gordon Cussens to be put through his pantograph to use on my own rifles and then make them available to other people.

....unfortunately the pic makes it look short and a bit clubbish, but it actually has a 20" barrel...

Re: works in progress

you must change the rear sight!

I would glue a piece of buffalo horn on the tip of the full stock
something like this

Re: works in progress

...I agree with you completely.....at this point, the gun has only been set up to give me an idea of proportions when making these stocks.I have some buffalo horn for a grip cap and fore-end snobble when the proper stock is cut, also a set of decent sights....mannlicher stocked rifles don't look right without at least a front sight. I truly appreciate comments on these stocks, ( especially from the man who gave us the worlds greatest mosin project )as I have a preference for the less common types of rifles, Carcanos; SMLE's and the Mosin Nagants, etc, stock style can be a very personal, non mainsteam type of thing.
