My Mod 70 in .338 Win Mag could do with a bit of tlc and a good hand to do it.
Anyone care to name any names that are good men when it comes to refurbishing a timber stock?
There are plenty of scratches in the finish and I would be wanting an oiled finish.
Throw some names if any please.Pref in Vic.
And NO I wouldn't even contemplate a DIY job!

In my opinion, your gun does not need a refinish. It is a .338 hunting gun and as such, it is going to pick up some beauty marks. If it were mine I would leave it just as it is and appreciate it for what it can do. If you have any really deep scratches on it, just rub on a light coat of good stock oil. You should be putting on a coat a year anyway just to help keep it water proof and looking good.
Very nice gun by the way, I would be proud to own that one! Bob

I agree with Bob - that is a nice looking rifle. A coat of oil a year is a good thing - or at least a good hard floor wax.

That is a beautiful rifle!
I agree that it does not need a face lift. Just a little lemon oil to keep the wood fibers (fibres) flexable and then a coat or two of linseed oil to enhance the grain and protect against water.
Honest marks do not detract from this rifle, they are its history.

Fellas dont get me wrong,anyone that knows me have seen my "go to rifles" that are worn,torn,chipped and have blueless exteriors that show the years so readily.
They are lucky to get a proper clean in the tube at times.
This one cops the same treatment but I`m not happy with the "shine" finish.Its too reflective for me and I want it dulled down to oil and thought that she could do with a 'polish up".
I read an old article on stocks where the writer used scraper blades instead of sandpaper to remove the varnish like film on the stock. He wrote that it can be done in four hours...yeah right!
I am an impatient old bastard that would do it in one and fark the job right up,hence the request for any names.
My Swedish mate is coming out for a visit and not that he cares but I would like to hand him a smart looker.

Rub the shine off of it with OO steel wool, then hand rub in a couple of coats of TruOil, building it till it starts to shine again. Finish up with a wet sanding of fine wet/dry paper flooded with oil to get rid of the shine. Wipe off the excess oil and hand buff it with a soft towel. Done, a perfect subdued oil finish. Linspeed oil also works just as well. Bob

Bob thank you,but after reading through so many pages of different methods I haven't actually got the DEFINITIVE way.
40 years ago I used to shoot a Carl Gustav Husqvarna 308W that had a factory oiled stock. It was a great job and I wish I knew what the factory finish on that rifle was.

I haven't seen that one before Gryph, nice bit of timber on that rifle...I gotta say, I agree with the others. At least it's not as "bad" as the original gloss finish on my Rem 700 BDL once was.

As Birdhunter50 suggested, except use Boiled Linseed Oil and rub back with "Pumice Stone" that'll give ya a nice matt finish.

I like fine Pumice or rotten-stone for "rubbing" the 'shine' from a True Oil'd stock.
