What has happened to the 270 Winchester and the 7m

At one time all the rage seemed to be the 270 Winchester and the 7mm Remington Magnum. Everyone seemed to use them, all other the world.
What has happened? Does anyone here have one, still use them, or not? Why?

MY cousin who was a army sniper use's his 7mag for everything from belly pigs to deer and black beer,you can hand load a lot of diffrent loadings for this cal

I use both the 270 and the 7mm magnum. My 270 is a Interarms Mark X and my 7mm is a Smith & Wession model 1500. S&M no longer make the model 1500. But with my 3x9 Nikon
scope it is the best shooting rifle I own. My 270 is also a sweet shooter and I shot them as much as I can.

I have been using my Win mod 70 7mm for 20 plus years and it has not let me down if i shoot right,i love this old battle scarred rifle that is in a great calibre for game in our neck of the woods.There was some talk on another forum that due to the wsm`s they are all of a sudden redundant???? what crap this calibre will take what we want on most game around the world within reason.

Fortunately I have both these calibers& use them extensively.The 270 is a Steyr& the 7mag.a Win.post 64.I have hunted deer,neelgai,ibex,marcopolo sheep,wildboar and crocs.with these guns with great success.The only other caliber i prefer is a 300WB.MAG.

Great, especially ibex and Marco Polo sheep. Have you got any photos that you can post.

Ibex can make such grand trophies and Marco Polo sheep are one of the top sheep trophies in the world. Fantastic.

You bet about the big rams,lot of hunters carry on about getting a big buff but to get one of these rams at high altitudes fair chase(no chopper) makes getting Mbogo look tame and they are tops of animals on my wish list(argali`s)

In 1984 I won a Remington 700 in 7mm Remington Magnum, and immediately sent it off to Chet Brown, of Brown Precision, and had him work his magic on it. It is the most accurate big game rifle I've ever seen, and still sees plenty of action on Pronghorn hunts, as well as the open spaces in Namibia.

Roberto, the rifle started off as an out of the box Remington 700 BDL. I sent it off to Brown Precision, and Chet did the following work(which I of course agreed to after talking with him): first of all, we went with one of his then new fiberglass stocks. We deleted the floor plate, which made the rifle like the Model 700 ADL. Next Chet really tapered the barrel down, removing almost 1/3 of the exterior barrel metal to save some more weight. Then the barreled action had an electrolis nickle plating applied to it. Then the action was glued into the stock. With good reloads, this rifle is as accurate as my 22-250 varmit rig! The only problem with it is because of the very light barrel, it is nearly impossible to shoot well offhand. However, from a solid rest on the bench, or in the field using a good bipod or daypack it can't be beat. The year after I had the work done, I used it on a Dall Sheep hunt in the Yukon Territory with outfitter Stan Renolds, and took a beautiful 37 inch ram at 527 paces. A couple of years ago I used it to pop some sod poodles (prarie dogs), the longest kill being a range finder distanced 561 yards (on the first shot), but don't ask me to repeat that stroke of luck again.

I own a remington sendero in 7mm rem mag.I was wandering if anyone could shed some light on some good load combinations.Also has anyone tried the new nosler accubond in 160gn, if so what were the results.

I was the one that made the 'redundant' comment Gryph and taken in context with the rest of the thread in question you would see it was a tongue in cheek remark to emphasise my point that the new WSM cartridges only serve to duplicate the ballistics of already available cartridges. As I said, it is a personal choice with no difference made to the game on the ground.

I've used the .270 quite a bit here in California. My rifle is a Winchester Classic pre-64. Because of BCS, I'm always trying out different loads but I guess the 150 Grain Nosler Partition loaded to around 2900 FPS would be my favorite.

The 7mm.mag. is one of the best flat shooting rifles that i have used.According to Sam Fadala "its the best allround rifle ever made".In open country and on mid size game its simply outstanding.

A .270 Win.130gr.bullet at 3100 fps.zeroed at 25 yds.will be 3 inches low at 300 yds.whereas a 7mm.mag.139grs.zeroed at 25 yds.will have zero drop at 300 yds.At 100 and 200 yds. both bullets will be plus 3 and 4 inches high resp.Add to this the energy in ft.lbs. the 7mm.has a higher energy.

Gryphon,this data is in a book by Sam Fadala,an author of 11 books on hunting and editor of various hunting,reloading magazines.Now i have not personally tried this out i.e.zero at 25 yds.and measure but i have used both calibers extensively and found the 7mm.mag.to be a flatter shooter as compared to the 270 at 300 yds.As far as energy in ft.lbs. is concerned it is definately more.
If you manage to get hold of Fadalas book,The Riflemans Bible it is on page 66.

Iqbal you are absolutely right there friend,i mis-read your posts the day i replied to you,i certainly wasnt switched on myself that day as i have always known that the 7 mm is superior to the 270,thanks for your input

It doesn't seem worth buying the oter if you already have one does it. Flat shooting rifles are terribley over rated when you need to talk in terms of 1 moa to seperate them. Energy becomes the only thing worth discussing.

Mickey,in my opinion if you already have a .270 and need to go up for another flat shooter i would go for the 300 WB mag.If you have a 7mm.mag.and need to go down (no pun intended)i would go for the .243 win.This cal.though low on energy is a very flat shooter for game upto deer.

Okay, what happened to the British .275 H&H Mag?
Early in the last century it was said to have been the perfect light "plains game" cartridge.
Elmer Keith talks about it in his book, Big Game Rifle & Cartridges. Supposedly it's the forerunner of the 7mm Rem Mag & 7mm Weatherby Mag.

Nick,the 275 H&H was introduced in 1911/12 and were the first 7mm.mags. but although a fair no. of American custom rifles were made for this round no factory rifles were made.The belted version known in the U.S. as the 275 H&H MAG.was loaded by the Western Cartridge Co.until 1939.It was developed by F.W.Jones as an improvement of the 280 Ross.Eley and Kynoch loaded bullets of 105,140,143,150,160 and 180 grains.The 275H&H Mag.is similar to the 7mm.Rem.mag.

I'm going on a deer,boar,and what ever else shows up hunt and I taking my 7mm mag & my 270 both are sighted in with 140 Serria bullets. Am going down to Alabama the 2,3,&4th
of Jan.to hunt on a plantation thats overrun with deer from what I've heard.

I have both guns. The 270 does just fine with 140 and 150 gr bullets on game up to 350-400 pounds.
If I need a bit more "fire-power", I get out the 7 mag with 175 gr bullets.

Remember the old Speer 170 gr. .270 WCF bullet at near 2900 FPS, it sure was a dandy...But IMO a 160 gr. Nolser will do about anything the 7 Mag can muster up for all practical purposes...In fact if I need a bigger gun I want a .338 or perhaps my old 300 H&H with a hot handload.
