New Damascus Barrels Manufactured Using Old Techniques

Heinz Denig makes modern damascus barrels using the old techniques but with modern steels as their raw materials. Hopefully, some of our German members would have more information about his work.

Personally, I just can't take my eyes of these barrels. They are beautiful!

Evidently he's built barrels that made it through nitro proof.

I'd like to have the shop next door to his forge!

Tinker,

Yes, Herr Denig's barrels pass Nitro Proof easily. There are some other barrelmakers who build Damascus barrels the raditional way - one mroe in Germany, one in Sweden and one, I am told, in the USA. I hope to post their information here as I find it. Nowhere else would this be appreciated as much as it would be here.

BTW Herr Denig teaches Damascus barrel and knife making if someone is interested. He is past 70 years now in age and I hope that someone who is interested in his techniques which he rediscovered through research takes the time to learn and use them. I am personally all toes or else I would rather learn this craft than continue on my present geriatric education.

Good hunting, my friend!

Mehul-

Thanks for the good wishes in the hunting field.
Same to you sir!

I'll look forward to seeing what you come up with on an American damascus barrel maker.
Perhaps that'll call for a field trip...

Cheers
Tinker

What is that style of rifling called? With a hexagonal bore, the grooves look redundant, unless it's to relieve pressure somehow.

They are very strange looking for Damascus barrels due to the steel used. I very much prefer the old English types, which seem to have had no trouble passing nitro proofs in the 1895 through 1920's.

Tinker,

I'll send you an e-mail shortly. Hopefully, we can contact the gentleman concerned if we think of possible contacts who may be able to help.

Cheers, my friend!

Re: New Damascus Barrels Manufactured Using Old Techniques

Daryl,

The other gentlemen I am trying to contact make Damascus barrels using steels that end up looking like the older barrels. That said, if you can live with a Damascus steel made using modern technology, then Damasteel in Sweden have a new steel - 92x .y which can be browned to look just like traditional Damascus.

Stefan Gobec in Austria makes barrels using Damasteel if someone can accept Damascus manufactured using high tech methods and not the traditional way.
