From woodleigh's new catalogue, I see they are offering this whopping bullet for the 270 . Does anyone know if loading data is available for that size of bullet in the 270 Winchester - not the WSM mind you? |

don't know where you are or what powders are available to you. my Hodgdon data manual #26 has data for a 180 using Hodgdon powder only. 270 WCF. for H4831; starting load 51 gr., vel. 2434, 45,600 CUP. max 54 gr, 2581, 52,000 CUP H1000; start 57 gr, 2460, 41,500 CUP. max 60 gr, 2614, 50,300 CUP H4350; start 46 gr, 2269, 43,600 CUP. max 48 gr, 2387, 50,100 CUP also lists H870 but starting is 60 gr and i think you'd have a highly compressed load. regarding case volume, think H4831 would be the call. i think Alliant R22 or IMR 7828 could be used with the same data as the H4831 if you proceed carefully. |

Thanks! Mind you , it might have been an April fool joke on woodleigh's part. |

I think I am going to get some for my .270weatherby. I think such a heavy bullet will give the edge to the weatherby round, on bigger game such as zebra, kudu and downwards. |

Good luck with that, if it can handle the Weatherby speeds then I might have to try them. |

I'm wondering if the "normal" 1/10" twist of the .270 Win will stabilize a long 180??? Maybe a very blunt RN...maybe, but a pointed, long 180? I wonder... |

A while back Barnes offered the Traditional range of bullets and included one in 180 grain for the .270 in their Number 1 manual they listed the following loads for it: federal cases and 210 primers, case trimmed to 2.530 inches Powder IMR 4350 46.00 (2567 fps) - max 50.00 (2685 fps) IMR 4831 47.00 (2528 fps) - max 51.00 (2690 fps) IMR 7828 50.00 (2603 fps) - max 54.00 (2731 fps) h 414 44.0 (2499 fps) - max 48.5 (2639 fps) H 4831 51.0 (2622 fps) - max 55.0 (2737 fps) RL 19 49.0 (2596 fps) - max 53.0 (2721 fps) Rl 22 49.0 (2608 fps) - max 53.5 (2743 fps) these are figures from the Barnes Volume # 1 and NOT my figures so anyone minded to follow them must advance with the usual caution. a friend did however try some here in the UK a while back and found pressure problems in his rifle ( a Sako I think) and also they did not stabilise at 100 yards, hegave up on them and went back to 150 partitions jonathan |

Jtom, a 180/.270 @ 2650 fps sounds like a real winner to me. With a 1/8 twist and good solder-core type bullets, such a combination should make for an excellent cartridge of somewhat different performance to the "standard" .270. I have a feeling the performance of the 6.5x55 sheds good light on what might be done with long-for-caliber .270 bullets. Thanks for posting. I did not think the standard 1/10 twist was quite up to making a 180/.270 go where we want it to go. Possibly some might get ok accuracy out of the old twist, but I reckon most won't. |
