.416 Ruger? Anyone shoot yet?

I was just wondering if anyone here has shot the new 416 Ruger yet, and if so, what their impressions were...

That will be a wonderful round - custom wildcat or factory - doesn't matter. It has the right capacity & perfect length, just like the .416 Taylor, albeit the Taylor is a bit smaller in capacity and has that useless belt.

Re: .416 Ruger? Anyone shoot yet?

Interesting...much thanks to the replies so far! My neighbor is setting one up on a left hand Model 70 action, and as I'm possibly going to be joining him for a hunt in South Africa next spring, I've got to thinking about it. I currently am working on a 9.3x62mm on a FN Mauser action, but I wasn't sure if I'd have it done in time. Thus my interest in this cartridge, and potentially just buying a rifle for the trip...

Hopefully they'll be some more input on it(?)...

Re: .416 Ruger? Anyone shoot yet?

In S Africa..unless you are going after dangerous game--you really don't need a .416 or even .375 for that matter...shots can be a bit further than places like Zim or others ..and therefore I sugget going with a 250 gr in 338 or 200 gr in 300 or one caliber or another..

BUT, agree, think they will sell a boat load of the .416 Rugers and plan to have one soon myself..

I am a HUGE fan of the .416--think it is a fantastic caliber with really good SD and BC with the 400 gr bullet...and IMHO, a better caliber the the Win .458.. ..and I owe a couple of both...but, again, that's just me...

Re: .416 Ruger? Anyone shoot yet?

I agree, unless game farm buff or white rhino is on list, a .416 in South Africa seems unnecessary.

Regardless, the .416 looks like the .40 Adolph/Newton and has to be a winner, except...

RIPP, what does it do better than your Remington?

Re: .416 Ruger? Anyone shoot yet?

Thanks for the replies and advice guys, I may just buy a 9.3x62 then, and work on the 9.3x62mm Mauser as time permits and I get access to a lathe (either my buddy's or finally get my own). I think the biggest thing we'll shoot is wildebest...which I don't think is DG(?)...

BTW, I got my Rigby peep site from Rob Zimmerman...nice piece of work! Just have to mill the dovetail on the cocking piece (easy work on my Taig micro mill)...

Maybe I'll build a 416 Ruger at a later time, like when brass and dies are available...as the thread in the other forum alludes to...

Re: .416 Ruger? Anyone shoot yet?

Haven't checked in for a while, and saw your post. Been working a ton, and have been dealing with hospitals and medical issues with my 90 year old Mom, so haven't frequented the boards as much as before.

Quick answer to your question - I love my 416 Ruger in the Hawkeye! Shoots great, very accurate, and balances nicely with the Leupold 1.75x6X scope I have on it. Gonna try to shoot another box or two this week. I am one who likes the Hogue overmolded stocks, and the "sticky" feel, and the size and swell fits my large hands very well. Sights seem very durable also. Should be great on a coastal bear hunt next year also. The muzzle blast is not excessive, even with the 20 inch barrel. A 23 inch tube in the African would be sweet.

I will be taking it to Zimbabwe on my buff and ele hunt in August this year. Wanted something a little bigger than the CZ550 in 9.3x62, and also have a Ruger #1 in 450/400 which people are trying to talk me out of taking (because of the single shot issue). My partner will be using his Sako 375 H&H.

Saw last year where someone had ordered the African -23" tube with the Hogue overmoded stock..looked pretty cool and personally that is the way I would like to go---BUT, that stainless would be nice for teh coastal bear hunt...

Guess one could just buy both and switch back and forth as needed...

Re: .416 Ruger? Anyone shoot yet?

I won't be surprised when honest reloading data comes out, that it wont do as claimed from short barrels. Until then, I would hold my horses. Having picked up the Rugers in .375 Ruger I have not been impressed. The stock configeration is meant for someone much smaller than myself. At least when Bill was around, Ruger rifles had a decent fit.
