9,3x57 loads in the mauser 96

its maybe interesting for the public here: as you know Husqvarna had made sporting rifles in this caliber with Mauser 98 actions and also with Mauser 96 actions. the swedish mauser isnt so strong like his successor and reloders have crack it from time to time with hot loads.I was sending Norma a mail about the 9,3x57 loads and the use in the mauser 96.

232grains( 15 gram) Oryx Velocity fps 2362

285grains( 18.5 gram) Alaska Velocity fps 2067

232grains( 15.0 gram) Full Metal Jacket Velocity fps 2215

my mail: "dear mister nilson

... a Husqvarna Mod.46 in 9,3x57 and have heard storys about accidents with such rifles because its based on the mauser 96 system. ...
we can say that the 9,3x57 is a "norma" cartridge I belief that you load with this problems in mind. can you tell me that your 9,3x57 cartridges are safe in a Mod.46 rifle in good servicable condition?"

norma's reply
"Åke Nilsson <ake.nilsson@norma.cc>
Dear Lanchester

Yes they are we regular fire the same action/ammo from time to time
this during our daily quality-check of production.

Bests' Åke Nilsson R&D-dep."

I see this as officially because no one knows more about the 9,3x57 , do not exceed normas bullet weigth/velocity combination in a Mod.46 and you are one the safe side

Also, from Norma's web site:

9.3x57
"Since no pressure standard exists for this number, we chose to use a relatively conservative 43,500-psi (3000 Bars) maximum pressure for loads presented here."

The Husky 9.3x57's are model 94's not model 96s although the differences are minor.

I'm not going to give the cartridge mystical powers {it would be easy to careen off in that direction... }, but it is one of the best allround cartridges for use on North America.

Indeed, it truly comes into its own in a modern action as the 57mm case is highly efficient, gives performance equal to the original loads in 9.3x62 and begs to be chambered in a modern action and loaded with highpressure modern factory ammunition. This last bit ain't gonna happen of course.

Until then, we who handload and use the cartridge in strong actions like the 98's will just keep smiling!

I'd like to see a modern semi-auto made akso, maybe ala the old Russian Medved "Bear" in 9,3x54R. The 57 case begs for use in a light semi-, and regardless, it alread IS toted around in some of the best mountain rifle's ever made; superlight Model 46 Husqvarnas.

Great cartridge!

Daryl:
I may be behind here. The Husky 46s are a '94 action? I am looking at my 46 and my military 1896.
I admit to not having a military 1894, but I see little difference in the action. Tell me the history. I am interested. Sorry to go off subject.

450:

Good news! I've wondered, as I have read that the 9.3x57 is gaining in popularity due to increases in boar numbers and the "perfection" of the 9.3x57 for that game. True?

88:

Technically, I believe, the ACTION is a 94. IIRC, the Swedish military never refered to the ACTION as anything but a 94, and military rifle models 96 and 38 use "94" actions. Having said that, the 96 series actions are slightly different than 94's, can't remember the exact specs here. I need to check Crown Jewels and ask the question over at the Swede Forum for certainty.

Husqvarna 46's use 94/96 actions.

Husqvarna 146's use FN 98 actions. Actually, these were military actions new made and plucked off the line and sold to HVA for use in building guns during a short period 1938-1941 when there was a shortage of Swede actions for commerical use. These FN actions should not be confused with the later FN 98-type actions used during the Model 640 series production.

In addition, there is yet another "96-type" action used by HVA for commercial rifles. It is a regular 96-type without the thumb cut for stripper clip. That is, it has a solid left wall. It continues the ring diameter all the way to the bridge and is a slick looking action. Very sleek and hints at the later series 1600 actions. Sometimes referred to as "strengthened" or "reinforced", I suspect it was in fact merely cheaper to produce as a significant amount of machine time was skipped...

Some buffs state that when Husqvarna referes to an "improved" action as per their 1600 and later guns, the action they "improved" was the 96, not 98. Thus the continued streamlining of actions in HVA production. 98's look "clubby" next to a 96.

Re: 9,3x57 loads in the mauser 96

Aren't the 1600 and later HVA actions small ring while the FN98 is a large ring? Is the "improved" M96 action an improvement over the FN98 action? Is it any stronger?

Re: 9,3x57 loads in the mauser 96

Larry: "improved" is a relative term. Later HVA's are considered small ring actions, while the FN 98's are large ring actions. As for improvements, the later HVA's have gas relief improvements and safety lugs.
