338 Marlin Express---Remington 30 AR

Just read last evening in this month's RIFLE SHOOTER magazine that Marlin along with Hornady have come out with a .338 lever gun..states they are attempting similar ballistics of a 30'06 with .338 bullets in a lever gun...currently offered in 200 gr flex tip bullets...might be an interesting gun for hunting in the timber for bear, elk and deer..as they goal is to have a hard hitting but flatter shooting lever than the 450 Marlin..
Also Remington has come out with a .30 for it AR_15 platform..so if you get tired of it you can swith it out on the top reciever for the 223, 204 or 243...have not read the entire article yet...

I wonder if the .338 cartridge will be all that different than a .338-06 or the .338 Federal?

The small-cased Marlin cartridges appear to be pretty good as long as factory ammo is used. I'm not too enthusiastic about trying to match the factory specs with handloads in the small cases they've adopted. The 308 (or 307) Win will work through the action. I think by using a small case, they could be to trying keep people from using 308 Win loading data, which may (or maybe not) stress the M336 action.
My gut feeling is that for us handloaders, a wildcat like the 338#2 JDJ or the 375 JDJ would be a better approach. In fact, I like the ballistics of my 14" 309 JDJ Contender, and think that would be an ideal Marlin chambering. A 20" barrel would give the cartridge "legs."
Oh, and before anybody chastises me about pointed bullets in tubular magazines, there is an easy cure. Don't do that.

The brief part I read of the article stated it was similar to the .338 Federal..had the usual spin trying to sell it..agree with your statement..will be similar..

It's interesting how the .358, .348, .356, and the .307 Winchester fell out of favor and became obsolete yet many of todays newer cartridges, especially in the "light and handy" department, duplicate essentially the same ballistics.

They need to sell more --so they are better...
