What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

I hate to say it but the Merkel 500 NE is the probably worst kicking rifle I own with the exception modified all weather ruger 338 rebarreled to 458 WM at about 6 pounds.Yes I added a muzzlebreak! Without the muzzlebreak it a beast from H*LL!!

They is a definite difference between a 470 NE, A standard 458 Wm, and/or similar kickers and the Big 500 Double!!

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

A nine pound .458 Winchester magnum qualifies as the hardest kicker. A Weatherby Mark 5 in .300 Weatherby was the worst to shoot off the bench though. The Mark 5 stock with its cant and Monte Carlo nonsense just did not fit. I am certain the same rifle with a proper, Classic syled stock, would not have been near as punishing. I sold the Mark 5 and tuned up, and rebarreled an old tang safety Ruger in .300 Winchester. A real pussy compared to the Weatherby. The stock fits a lot better too.

I put a Limbsaver on the .458. This makes load development and sighting in chores on the bench a lot easier. Gone are the I've been beaten up feelings the next day. A little stiff, but not sore.

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

Funny, my own Merkel 500 is not that bad. Part of it may be stock. The Merkel fits me fine, but LOP and stock design is a big factor in perceived recoil. What may work for my arm length, hand, etc may not work for your physical characteristics. I had the same issue with a Ferlib-built Dakota DR in 375 Flanged, not normally a hard kicking rifle by any stretch of the imagination. This one had the original stock cut WAY down to fit a petite woman, who then passed on the gun. I tried it as it was a beautifully engraved round bodied Ferlib, which are scarce to begin with. The shortened LOP and altered angles made for a 375 Flanged that felt like a 577. I passed as they didn't want to do a restock and I didn't want to buy it at the price offered without one.

My hardest kicker? 577 Rigby. This one was built a tad light to start with, and should have been regulated for a lighter loading. Nice rifle, but I treat it with a LOT of respect, position my hands very carefully, wear shooting gloves, and make sure I have a firm grip. Dave

300 RUM kicks harder than my 375H&H. Even with a muzzel brake!

500 A-Square / Heym Express at 10 1/2 lbs

But I got an "upgrade"-invitation to fire a Schilling hammer rifle 8 bore with a steel butt plate.
I do not know whether I should try this. Maybe a heavy jacket helps?

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

That would be my rimless .577, which duplicates .577 NE performance in a shortened, 2.500" case. It weighs just at 13 pounds and the recoil is a powerful shove, but I usually end up taking two steps backwards each time I shoot it. It took a while to evolve a movement, like a little dance step, to keep my feet from getting tangled up.

The movement to avoid is left foot over right foot. I end up on the ground every time. The most effective one involves putting most of my weight on my left foot and leaning into the shot like a trap shooter, then taking a step backward with the right foot as the round goes off, followed by a step backward with the left foot. Don't try this on the edge of a cliff.

130 grains of 4895 and a 750 grain bullet produces 2050 fps, which should make the most discerning Ndofu happy.

None of you guys with .300's, .375" or .458's have a 3" or 3 1/2" 12 bore? How about a 3 1/2" 10 bore? - even more recoil. The 3" 12 out does a 9 pound .458, BTW.

Good point.

I'm chuckling here, as I used to have a little 4 1/2 pound, 19-inch barreled H&R single shot 12 bore that when fired with a load of 3-inch #1 or 3-inch 00 buckshot would wake you up and put you back to sleep again.

Not a rifle, but it was my Hardest Kicking Su'mbugger to be sure...

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

You're right, they aren't rifles, but they are kickers.
; Shot off the bench is memorable, just the same.
; I did fire one shot from a .505 Barnes Supreme - offhand. Spun me around like a weather-cock. 125gr. 3031 with a 600gr. Barnes. Took 20min for a coffee then went back to shooting my .375H&H- felt like a .222 after that experience.
; John Buhmiller used to say, if you think your present gun kicks, shoot something a LOT bigger, then it'll feel like nothing at all. It's true.

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

My .458 Winchester is moving a 500 grain solid at an honest 2150 fps. I have fired 3 inch 12 guage slugs out of my Remington 870 off the bench and they were not even in the same league.

...its my .404 (weighing only slightly over 7 pounds), but I also used some foreign rifles that kicked a big lot harder (.505 Gibbs, .500 NE)......

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

What a great forum this is. I check these forums often just to read what real people have to say about real events, it's a bit difficult to explain to somebody what recoil feels like unless they're willing to try it. Particularly related to comment by DarrylS regarding 12g recoil My Mossberg 12g bolt action is enough for me with the choke wound right in besides that .300W is as big as I've fired. Hope there's lots more replies to this post

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

My R93 in 9,3x62 weighs 6,2 pounds (without scope) and gets your attention when shooting it from the bench with full 300 gr. loads - have shot PH's CZ in .375H&H and M70 in .458WM - .458 with tamed 500gr was much more pleasant than .375 with hot 300gr., and I guess it is just as far as I would go by now, since a memory of a single bench shot with .460 Weatherby kicked the bright ideas out of my head for a long long time

In rifles it would be my .375 H&H. Will probably have a different answer when my .416 gets built. But if you had asked what is the worst recoiling firearm I have at my house it would be the 10 ga shotgun. About all I can endure is 20 - 25 rounds at a time.

:
:
: As with much in this sport, felt recoil is a personal thing attenuationg to stock/rifle fit/weight as much as bullet weight and velocity.
: After shooting 2,000 gophers with a .17 centrefire and seening every hit, to shoot a .22-250 one immediately notices the kick of the larger case. Out of 100 shots on gophers with a 20X scope, you would not see even one hit with the .22-250 sporter - yet that is a round that doesn't 'kick'. The difference is relativety.

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

My brother had a Casartelli (I think) in .378 Weatherby that really rung your bell!
Once his buddy's nose started bleeding after three shots.
Too bad too, it was about the most "deluxe" rifle I had ever seen, but so damn miserable to shoot he sold it off.

Mine was a British made 404 that weighed only 7 1/4 lb.It had a smooth steel buttplate and a lot of drop in the stock. It did this with only 4 rounds.

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

Looks like your hold is too far out!
Sometimes the length of pull is too short and the butt can slip out toward your bicep, especially when fast cycling a bolt gun. I've never had bruising that bad even with the 375, 416Rigby, or the 500 Jeffery - which by the way is really not bad at all.

The smooth steel butt just let it slip down my sweatshirt.Had I shot it any more I had a slip on pad for it.

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

Wow, that musta hurt!

I was curious and did the RECOIL math on two of my rifles--

My 6 pound 458 WMag conversion in a Ruger allweather bolt works out to 118 ftpnds energy at a velocity of 35 ft/sec.Yowsers, that hurts!!

Thus the muzzle break and reduced loads.

The 500 NE Double works out to 87 ftpnds at 22 ft/sec-a pussycat compared to the 458WMag--

; Obviously the stock is too long for you. You are supposed to be shooting the .404 off the pocket in your shoulder, not your arm.

Re: What's your Hardest Kickin Rifle??

The hardest kicking rifle I have shot (I don't own them, I made them for others) is the 4 bore.
One shot convinced me completely that I don't want to own one.
Here's a pic of a friend firing one with a light charge (not kidding either, this was a 60% charge)
He's 5 foot 9 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds.

I am starting on BigDog's 2 bore. There's NO WAY I am going to fire it. I will test fire the barrel, (tied to a tractor tire), but I am NOT putting this thing against my shoulder!

probably my guide gun in 45/70 with heavy loads pushed hard - it kicks harder than my 375 H+H. Nice light rifle though and fun to shoot

Steve,

Big Dog's gun hurts when I think about it. But, considering that the gentleman shoots a 600 Nitro Express pistol for fun, he is, probably, the best person to hunt with a 2 bore!

If he does not mind, I hope we shall see your superb pictures of the build process over here.

Best wishes and good hunting!

Found this thread the other day..started laughing a bit reading the responses..

Agree with the above however..the hardest kicking rifle I have ever shot was a Merkel in .470NE..not sure if its stock design, too short for me, whatever..but WOW..2- 4 shots and that was it for me..sold it..got a WR in same caliber..can shoot that all day long no problem..
