TIME OUT is BS

OK, that did it, that damn time out gets me about every other post! This is the only place on the internet where ! have this problem! I really don't see the need for the timeout feature at all, it is nothing but a pain in the assand serves no purpose I can see! Admitted I'm a slow typer, but this SUCKS!

Mac,

The time out should be removed or made

25 times longer in my opinion!!!!!

Re: TIME OUT is BS

Mac

I asked you a number of questions last time you mentioned this. And also gave information in how to fix the problem when it occurs.

The best way to avoid the "time out" on the boards, is to use the normal "REPLY" button not the "QUICK REPLY". This will take you to a new screen ie NOT the QUICK REPLY box at the bottom of the page. I have never got the TIME OUT on the normal REPLY screen.

But I have NO IDEA what you are doing because you haven't answered with what you are actually doing! Can't help you if I don't know what you are doing.

***

If using QUICK REPLY ...

Also I mentioned to you, when you get the TIME OUT message, hit BACK on your browser. Then REFRESH. Your typed message should still be there and you can then post. This has worked 100% of the time for me.

Have you tried that? Please do.

***

I will leave this thread in this forum for a while then move it to the HELP forum where it belongs.

There is no setting for removing the TIME OUT on QUICK REPLY in the admin settings nor any means to increase it that I have found.

John,

This probably isn't where this request should be made, but since the thread was started here...

Anyway you could eliminate or shorten the wait time between searches. I likr to do a search first to see if a question has been answered. Sometimes it takes a few combinations to be sure I've done an addiquate search. The wait time is annoying if not downright discouraging.

I understand that the server takes a beating with searches, but the delay as it's set seems too long.

Thanks!

Done.

It has been reduced from 60 seconds to 10 seconds. If that causes a problem it might have to be increased. Searchs now can show 400 items not 200, and can be done for 5 years not 4 years.

With any of these changes we will review if they cause new complaints ie if they slow down the system. I don't notice that as I am on dial-up and it can't get a lot slower from that.

Re: TIME OUT is BS

I have been nailed by the time out ONLY when using the "quick reply" option and never whilst using the normal reply method.

I use the qick reply only for a brief response/post and the odd time when I get too long winded, it times me out.... otherwise, I have no problem responding.

In the even that you get timed out, hit the back button and your message should be on the screen then you can cut and paste it in the "normal" response window/page.

MAC, don't use the quick reply, and you shouldn't get timed out.

If using quick reply and it TIMES OUT, hit BACK, REFRESH or RELOAD. The typed message should still be in the QUICK REPLY box. Post away.

It doesn't seem to matter what I use, I get sapped at least half the time I post! consiquently, I don't post here ofthen anymore! The last time it got me was when I did use the quick reply, but I rarely use that mode. It isn't worth it to me to go through all manner of ring around the rosey, to get my post on the forum here. Unfortunetly my posts, for better, or worse, are long winded, that may be the reason. The reason doesn't matter to me!s

Re: TIME OUT is BS

The only problem I have encountered is sometimes when I back out of a thread you get the msg about not being able to search for period of time. That has been hit and miss for me as opposed to an "all the time thing"

Mac One suggestion that might be of use for you for this or any of the forums is if you do a long post then "copy" it before hitting.....post.....

There are in fact a lot of people who type their post in Word and then copy/paste it to the forum in question.

I think it must be your internet connection because it does not seem to be happening to many others. Do you have DSL service?

Hey everyone,

Lighten up! Some of you get too wound up in this forum.

Open a word processor, compose you reply, spell check then paste when you are ready.

Also, you seem to have a very short memory. When Nitrox updated the system everyone said "Bravo we love it!" Well, you don't get upgrades without new "features". Trust me, he has a laundry list of bug-fixes that will be applied the next go-around.

Finally, we are supposed to be Gents, start acting like one.

Re: TIME OUT is BS

One change of the newer version of these forums that did annoy me was the old custom script I added for show new posts in the header no longer worked. Well it no longer showed up.

Well I have added a new one below the advertsing banner, so that is again available.

Click on the link to display new threads and posts added to he forums. To refresh an existing one, it is also better to use that link again as well.

ie like this one:

Re: TIME OUT is BS

This works 100% of the time.

If using QUICK REPLY and you get a TIME OUT message.

1. Hit back

2. Hit REFRESH or RELOAD on your browser

3. Your message should still be in the QUICK REPLY box. At least it has ALWAYS been there for me.

4. Hit CONTINUE

OR EVEN SIMPLER

USE THE NORMAL REPLY BUTTON WHICH OPENS A DEDICATED SCREEN!

EASY!!!

BOTH WORK 100% OF THE TIME.

I think I have said it about 6 times so far on your threads on the issue.

If not it is user error and something you will have to sort out yourself.

Ah, the old failsafe "user error" !
Love it.

Keep up the good work John, great forum.
The only thing is I wish loading pictures
on this forum was as easy as other forums
but you can't have everything !

Re: TIME OUT is BS

Well 500Nitro it is called a "QUICK" reply. It usually only times out if the user leaves a page open for a long time.

If solutions are offered and not read then something else is causing the complaining.

Why don't you just lock or close the thread ?

It's BS anyway - nothing wrong with John's forums.

I think you're right. There's nothing else that needs to be said. Topic is locked.
