IT Help ! - Messenger Service popups

OK I'm looking for some help myself here.

I'm getting really irritating "Messenger Service" pop-ups on my PC when logged into the net. They ask you to go to some BS site and also when closed try to open a browser window to the site. My firewall prevents this.

I have previously had them and they slow everything down and pop-up every hour when logged in.

My anti-virus software doesn't detect any files either and the anti-virus vendor McAfee indiciated their s/w doesn't do anything to prevent them.

Any ideas on how to "fix" them? Also how are they activated to pop-up? Is there a resident file on my PC, a web-site, or do they somehow detect when you are logged into the net from a netserver somewhere?

Thanks.

They are really pissing me off and if I could send something "nasty" back down the line, or visit in person with a suitable tool for rapidly shutting down a computer (a sledgehammer for instance or two 480 gr Woodleigh softpoints) I would with no doubt.

Take a look to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ . May be it can help you.

There're some more anti-popups but I don't know how they works.

Download Adaware and spybot search and destroy. They both work for me in removing spy ware and stopping pop ups. I would also recommend getting Norton Anti virus and Norton Internet security. I had Mc Afee (sp) and on 2 occasions it let in 2 different Trojans that wiped out my system even with doing daily update checks. Needless to say I was thourghouly pissed.

Coes,

Just goes to show you that the Virus protection soft ware is not infallible. I got rid of Norton for the same reason and replaced it with McAffee online, never a problem since.

I had McAffee before Norton, and I had to do updates all the time and found it hard to keep up. That was when I went to Norton. Then the spy ware stuff started sneaking in as trojans and Norton wanted a new charge to update my software

This online McAffee is an annual subscription and I am alway updated. Everything runs in the back ground.

John i loaded " pop up cop" for a free 30 day trial and it stopped all that shit straight away...evn though its trial has ended i still hardly get one at all.
AVG has the free anti virus edition that works bloody well too.
Spybot is another that you should have on your comp mate.

Re: IT Help ! - Messenger Service popups

Hi guys

there is a service that runs in the background on your computer

its called messenger
you can disable this and it will stop the messenger popups

for windows xp, go to start/control panel/administrative tools/services
find messenger in the list, right click and choose stop. Then right click choose properties and set the startup type to disabled

this will fix the problem permanently, however having a firewall will be a better soloution.

There is a program called "kill the messenger" which is free from www.grc.com which disables the messenger service as well

happy hunting

I don't have the problem anymore since changing anti-virus software.
