Shipping scope mts and rings from the US
|
|
Looking to help out a fellow in Australia with some scope mounts and rings. Anybody receive small gun related parts from the US. Looking to ship them via USPS, no problem there. Mostly wondering about ITAR- can't seem to find a concrete answer. Any help appreciated.

Scope rings and bases are not a problem, just be careful with the description. Maybe call them "Mounting rings for optics".

Per Turnbull Restoration, anything attached to a gun must go through and exporter. I believe we have it worked out.

ITAR really did complicate things for any sort of export from the States

IT is illegal on your side, Tinker, to ship a scope to a Canada citizen - from anyone actually, store or individual.
Customs locally told me (2yrs. ago) they don't care, any more. Its the US side that levies fines - HLS.
There was an agreement between the Canadian PM (P.Trudeau) at the time and Clinton that it would be illegal to ship scopes to Canadian citizens. Interesting that US made Leupold scopes never saw a dip in sales, as US wholesalers could ship scopes to Canadian businesses with FAL's. The government just did not want Canadians getting scopes for 1/2 of CDN prices - or something?

I thought private postings were still OK for a lot of things?

I am having a very difficult time getting accurate up to the date info on this. I believe most of these small parts have been shifted to the Bureau of Industry and Commerce but still murky. I will keep trying but for now not worth the headache. As I said, I think we have it worked out to get the parts to the gent in Australia.

I've just become very interested in this post as the scope I want is not brought into Australia, nothing exotic just a long eye relief Simmons for my scout rifle. My local gunshop tells me that Simmons don't bring that model in.....any thoughts?

Have it sent to a mate. Then posted privately. I believe that works fine.

Wasn't there a shop advertising scopes imported from the states?

Did you ask has he sent to Australia before. This is about export laws of USA concerning firearms and parts. There was a story I read recently about a fellow who sent a stock- hunk of wood mind you-to Canada and received a subsequent visit from the Feds due to it being a gun part. As related it was not a pleasant experience and they walked away with a bit of his arse. The folks at Turnbull told me if it attaches to a gun it must go through an exporter. I suspect they do ship outside of the states and have probably done their due diligence.

OK, so what would happen, the feds would go and yell at the guy for doing the wrong thing but I can't see them sending the local plod around to my place for buying a legally ownable piece of optical equipment.

Once outside the USA, Australian customs law and state firearms law applies.
No problems with scopes and mounts whatsoever.
I've had barrels arrive at my door without any paperwork in the past.

Yuma, wouldn't send anybody to your house. This is a US thing and as I understand the fines for violation can be quite stiff, definitely not worth the trouble it could cause.
