"Australia's 'Toadzilla': Record-breaking cane toad found in Queensland

A cane toad so giant wildlife officers thought it was fake has been found in a north Australian rainforest.

The "monster" specimen is six times bigger than the average toad, weighs 2.7kg, and could break a world record.

Dubbed "Toadzilla", the animal was quickly placed in a container and removed from the wild.

Toads - which were first introduced to Australia in 1935 - are one of the country's most damaging pests and are now estimated to number over 2 billion.

When park ranger Kylee Gray first spotted the massive amphibian while out on patrol in Queensland, she couldn't believe her eyes.

"I've never seen anything so big," she told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"[It looked] almost like a football with legs. We dubbed it Toadzilla."

Her team quickly captured Toadzilla - believed to be a female - and returned to base to weigh her. They knew she would be heavy, but were surprised to find she could set a new world record.

The current Guinness World Record for the largest toad - 2.65kg - was set by a pet toad in Sweden named Prinsen in 1991.

Ms Gray says this giant specimen likely bulked out on a diet of insects, reptiles and small mammals.

"A cane toad that size will eat anything it can fit into its mouth," she said.

Toads have no natural predators in Australia and the poisonous species have wrought havoc on native animal populations.

Ms Gray isn't sure how old Toadzilla was - the species can live up to 15 years in the wild - but believes she has "been around a long time".

Toadzilla has since been euthanised, as is standard practice in Australia for the pests, and will be donated to the Queensland Museum."

Re: Australia's 'Toadzilla'

When my grandfather lived in Honduras, running a banana plantation around 1910, there were a lot of iguanas. He used to shoot them with his Savage 1907 32. My grandmother said that he got very good at knocking them out of trees and that they tasted very good.
I don't think that the hunters in Florida are eating those iguanas.
I wonder if the large toads taste like. May be a great delicacy.
I would think a good pcpo rifle would be fine for the toads and the local populatrion may be more accepting than someone hunting with a "firearm".

Could watch this stuff all day!

A few niggly concerns about firing at sky-lined targets in urban areas, firing over water in populated marinas etc, but quickly overshadowed by....
...er....well....
Jessica!

But back on topic, a plug for the original cane toad movie:
An Unnatural History.

My dog used to like chewing on lizards. Afterwards he would also always vomit from it. He didn't chew them up so something on their skins must have caused the reaction.

That is simply one huge case toad. Scary!

Re: Australia's 'Toadzilla'

Reptiles yes, fish no.
Crocs are definitely susceptible to cane toad poisoning, particularly the freshwater species, but I have caught both jungle perch and sooty grunters with well-digested toads in their guts and they fought the line as strongly as any game-fish (and I ate them!), so I presume barra are unaffected as well.

Indeed, amazing. I really missed not being able to fish for Barra (with someone) in 2020. Had to head home, oh well.

We had toads that big and larger in South Western Ontario, but non -poisonous.

Remember the first Harry Potter movie - toads that large - huge.

A great pity. All that guff over something less dangerous than the annual flu.

If you hadn't gone home, you could have fished for a year or two.

That would have been great!! Maybe not so much for Tracy.
Air Canada cancelled our $1,500.00 each, flights from Adelaide. To re-book, they became $15,000.00 ea, flights.
We got West Jet flights for $1,500.00 ea.

Re: Australia's 'Toadzilla'

On the drive back, almost to Sydney, we were able to book the West Jet flights to Van. for $1,500 each.
Still lost $5,000.00 to $6,000.00 on pre-bookings form Adelaide up to Alice Springs, then North to Darwin, over to Cairns, then down to Sydney to come home, not refunded. Tracy knows the exact amount as she did all the bookings and months of trying to get refunds.
We made it 10 days, of a 6 week vacation. got to visit with Homer, missed out seeing Mat.
