.318WR and Boars

Carried the 318WR on a recent hunt. Not really made for busting boars out of dry creek lines but it worked okay. The first boar was asleep amongst a log pile and very hard to make out , slipped a 250 woodleigh into him from about ten feet. Didn't move. Very large bodied boar. Second one was as he erupted out of the creek, from a shady bed. Didn't get very far.
Last couple were only small but great fun as they tried to make it to the safety of the long grass, 250s are a bit hard on pigs. Heres some pics. Cheers Mick

Re: .318WR and Boars

The 318 did well!
Might have to reload some lighter .338's & size down mate?

That first one is a well camo'd hog, for dry creek beds.

Looks like the 250's are just about perfect - for a wide variety of game!

Re: .318WR and Boars

Good show!

While the 250 gr .318's (.330) might be a bit tough on Aussie feral pigs, I think they would still kill well. Even if they zip threw a bit without expanding too much? A .330" is still a sizable bullet.

The .318 Westley Richards cartridge is a buffalo killer with the 250 gr SP and an elephant killer with the 250 gr FMJ's. Only not legal anymore! People always mention WDM Bell and his use of the .275 Rigby as his elephant rifle. It was in the Karamojo. But his preferred ele rifle was the .318 WR later in his career.

I have some 180 gr Bertram projectiles for the .318 WR on hand, but still lack the rifle to shoot them in! Bertram also makes a 250 gr SP. I reckon those projectiles, also cheaper than Woodleigh, might do well on pigs. But if hunting water buffalo, I reckon the 250 gr Woodleighs would be preferable, or for mixed hunts. I know some BGRC guys use the Bertrams for shooting paper, as they are cheaper than the Woodleighs and if they shoot to a similar point of impact, save money for competitions and also smaller game.

Re: .318WR and Boars

Thanks for sharing Mick!

What velocity does your rifle launch those 250gr woodleighs?

Shooting 250gr woodleigh SP in my 318WR at 2150fps, duplicate a solid. It goes clean through an Eland.

I am really battling to get my loads to 2200fps. I would love to get 2350fps.

The bertram bullets I bought, are undersize compared to woodleigh. When reloading, it actually falls into the case before I can seat it! So I have no choice but to shoot woodleighs.

Re: .318WR and Boars

Friend of mine had Lee make up up a set of dies for re-sizing .338" bullets down to .330 for his 8x56R Styer.

These bullets and die sizing system (3 dies) would also work well for the .318 Rigby.

One need only contact Lee by phone or through their custom shop for diameters and dies. They've been doing this for over 3 years now and should have a good handle on what is necessary.

My loads are out of the woodleigh book so for the 250 RNSP I'm probably getting 2250fps -2300fps, long barrel.
Not that interested as no pressure signs and the load shoots well. Also works well on game. The comment re "too hard on pigs". Is in regards to the penetration of the 250's. Even length ways shots exit on pigs. Ive been carrying it in the hope of chance at a buff. Should work fine judging from experiences with its performance on scrubbers.
Ill just keep carrying it and wait for the opportunity.
Im pretty basic with loads and once I've found one that works I stick to it so won't be changing from the woodleighs.
Its a pity the new rigby's are not offered in the great English calibres.
Cheers Mick
