Don't take a lot of video but on this hunt one of the station hands came along and took some video. Had to edit out the colourful commentary so put some music with it. Nice wide bull taken front on with a 375 H&H. After the first shot he was dead but didn't know it. The video shows a perfect frontal shot and also demonstrates how tough these animals can be. From memory the projectiles were Woodleighs.

Good to see. Shows how a decent choice of cartrisge/calibre still does not kill them instantly.
A fellow SA hunter was posting elsewhere about his plans to use a bow, or a muzzle loader. Either a 12 bore ML double rifle/shotun (not sure which) or a .50 ML shooting only 360 gr ball. The 12 bore shoots 480 gr hardened balls.
I recommend he use the 12 bore. And have a mate or guide armed with a decent rifle backing him up.
Another poster claims to guide saying he had shot a great many buffalo and thinks them like cows. Anyone who has hunted them a bit knows where they have been hard hunted they can be very wild and flee very quickly. And where they have been mostly unmolested, can be far less wild.
The trouble with these inadequate choices, bow or light rifle or ML, is shown clearly in that video. The buffalo was hit in the heart in the first shot (iMO) and yet ran, and took two more shots. IF the buffalo decided to have a go at the hunter instead, a light or inadequate choice of weapon becomes a problem quickly.

TKS for the video - tough bastards is right!
A .50 cal round ball only weighs 175 to 184gr., if .490" or .495" in diameter.
A .730" (12 bore) pure lead ball would weigh 583.3gr., roughly, while a .710"(13bore) ball would weigh 538.5gr. Cast either in hard lead and the weighs would be roughly 20 to 30gr. lighter depending on the alloy.
A .682" ball for my 14 bore ML rifle weighs 482gr. in pure lead and 466gr. in WW alloy.
A true 14 bore ball, ie: 693" would weigh 500.0gr. in pure lead and about 480gr. in hard lead.
In a SXS 12 bore, I would be inclined to use a 13 bore ball or slightly larger, say .720" with a decent .022" denim patch.
I think hunting anything big would be fun with a 12bore SXS & be certainly up to the task, if loaded appropriately, of course.

The bull in this photo was shot with a Holland 12 bore as pictured. Entered where you can see a bullet hole and found the slug in the rear opposite hip. It ran 50 m or so and piled up. I was not sure what to expect but the round performed perfectly and the tiny lady that fired it handled it well off the sticks.

Daryl i went back through the emails on it and all I can find is it was a 812 grain bullet at an assumed velocity of 1000fps. Rifle was a 12 Bore Paradox by Holland and Holland. I know he did a lot of research and played around with different alloys. His wife who shot the bull was doing a story on it but I have not as yet seen it. The bullet penetrated 52 inches which I found amazing.

I just read the article in some magazine, but now I can't find the magazine (I'm getting old and forgetful). I do remember the bullet was the "standard Paradox bullet" , they also used black powder (very cool). I was shocked at the penetration !!!!!! Very impressed.
Makes me want to get my Paradox out and try it on a buffalo later this year?????

Amazing penetration for that velocity...52 inches..wow...
As to the video---thx for posting..and as stated..tough sob...was he stirred up a bit prior to the shot? Just curious is all..

Thanks for the info Claydog.
Wish someone around here had a 10 or 12bore paradox to play with. I think a patched round ball would be fun, BP or smokeless.

Not at all. They had no idea you were there at all. Rifle didn't seem to kick you too much from sitting position. I shot a cape buffalo like that with a 500 and it nearly rolled me over.
