308 Norma mag

Went out to a mates place with him and his young boys.Late arvo it was.

My mate photographed 3 deer @ 250 yards but declined a shot due to the over gully retrieval of 300 yards down and 450 up late in the day. I saw a pair come out of the heavy green side to the rich pickings of the creek flat and took the maiden hind rather than the older hind for our freezer filler. She was the chosen one as the ute was later driven right to her for retrieval.

The Woodleigh 180 gr hydro entered just behind the right shoulder and only touched a rib bone and she fell a few metres away. There was a good gallon of claret in her chest cavity too, great performance imo especially considering the pill didnt break both shoulders.

Geez, Gryphon! Getting me impatient...the smith said "2-3 weeks finish time" about 6 weeks ago. When i checked last week he hadnt started yet.. *sighs*

Nice work. What's the rifle?

Good when the vehicle can get right up to it. I don't know how you guys get some of the big ones out, through many gullies, ridges and bush, except for lots of trips to and fro.

Rifle is a PH 98 action,26" S/S MAB in a bedded fiddleback maple stock built for me by my mate in the US,he is a self taught amateur worker and it was a real gift.It shoots so good too.

JH you are so right, retrieval is so fkn tough in some of the joints and even before my current injury I was reluctant to take a deer by myself.I do believe if you are going to roll one you should take it all out even if it means miles of up and down slog. But age catches up and now i only roll them where retrieval isnt a chore.

Remember at the bottom where the wallow you visited is? Imagine carting a big stag out of there..we have done a couple and one is so fkn sore for days and it is a relativily easy place.

I have documented on here the hydro performance prev Daryl, they are indeed impressive when seen working as they do.On skinning the front end yesterday there was only a 6" square of bruising, minimal loss..dogs won that bit.
