Quote:I thought I told you Gryphon .... come end of August I am pretty trim from sweating my guts out in the NT. But by Feb I have spent three months in the office and one month eating shite Mexican food in the USA... little to do about that... Climbing hills is no problem. I did a 1000m verticle climb in the snow in New Mexico a couple weeks back... no problem... but it was only for 1 day!! BTW - I live in prefectly good mountain country here in N-NSW.... just need to get out in them but the call of business (the office) is too great at the moment. |

Another DOK buffalo. Another buffalo, this time taken with my Ruger in 416 Rigby using 410gr Woodleigh SN This was a good buffalo as I walked in on it after seeing it from about 300 metres away. When I was about 100 metres, it spotted me and sniffed the air and then trotted about 15 metres towards me with it's head held high. From the time it spotted me, it didn't take it's eyes off me. I stayed still for about 30 seconds and tried to get a bit closer as there was a fair bit of trees and scrub between me and the buff. I walked about 15 metres and the buff didn't like this so he started to shake it's head from side to side and suddenly trotted another 10 or 15 metres. I was getting a little concerned as I was by myself (I know you should go hunting with other people but just sometimes you can't). The buff continued to walk closer until it was about 35 to 40 metres, staring straight at me. I was hoping it would turn side on so I could get a good heart / lung shot but this buffalo wasn't about to play the game and there was a stale-mate happening. It looked like the buff was getting a bit more pissed off and after what seemed like ages (about 30 seconds I guess), I decided to end the stand off and I took aim just below the horns on the front of the head and as the buffalo held his head still, I fired. The bull dropped where it stood. I have to agree with the previous posts, if you are going to be walking in on buffs (and personally it's the best way for hunting enjoyment) you don't want anything smaller than .40 cal. These big Bulls can take a huge amount of punishment. From this discussion thread - click here. |

Hi Ben, A lot of lovely photo's, are you using telephoto lens or were you able to get up close and personal?? Your Dad looks very happy with the result of the hunt and a very good specimen to boot. Cheers Mate, Jeff . |
Nope, not a telephoto lens. Some photos were fairly close, but others were further-away and were able to be cropped (zoomed-in) due to a good amount of mega-pixels to work with. Yep, that day when Dad got that bull is a really good memory. Thanks, Ben |
Thanks for all the pics Ben! It looks like alot of fun hunting there. That one with the bigger bull on a 'cold morning', What's cold for you? +10c? |

That double-up is just fantastic! |

Hopefully there are a few more soon mate only 113 days until I leave Canberra thank god!!!! What camera are you using for these photos? MOG |
Nothing fancy, Mog. Just a Fujifilm something-or-other for some, a little Sony Sureshot for others, and also a little Canon something-or-other. The Fujifilm was a little larger, but the other two fit into a pocket. They're not expensive cameras, all under a grand. I think the Fujifilm (long dead) was a whopping 3.2MP, whereas the other two are 6 and 7MP. |

What's a yank got to do to get an invite to one of these buffalo hunts. Offer to pay for the beer? Or the strippers? |

Quote: Both ........... Look, just bring plenty of money (a few wads of folded notes will do nicely) and we'll accomodate you . |

Quote:Quote: How much is this buff gonna cost me? I'm thinking of buying a classic muscle car, and it's starting to look like it'll be one thing or the other. Unless I find a really generous loan officer. Then I can have both. |

If you go over Freeloader take your fishing gear with you, it´s off the planet ! best, Mike |
I don't recall if I lost it during the divorce or the last move, but I no longer seem to have saltwater tackle. I'm also missing a baitcasting rod and a tacklebox. I'm thinking I lost it during the move. She just wasn't that cut-throat. Now I'm down to a light spinning rig. I'll probably have to live up to my name and mooch off somebody. I'd feel worse about it, if you diggers weren't going to be sticking me with the bill for the beer and strippers. So at the very least you can loan me a fishing rod. |
Plnety of Barra in the fresh water as well - although the Salt water one's taste better. You can catch them on anything - round hand reels and bits of tin foil on the hook !!! LOL. But a good rod and reel is better. . . |

Quote: Ben I am starting to take a dislike to you. You are always smilling With just cause. Well done! Just don't tell me you walked 200 metres from your back door and shot that buff. Cheers Greg |

200m? I wish! It was about 100km. But, about a month ago, I was walking the dog along the cycle track that goes from town to the base, and not far past All Seasons (so, quite close to Casuarina Street Primary School, really) we found fresh bull buffalo dung on the path. That would've been under two kilometres as the crow flies from my house. But that sort of thing is pretty rare. It's been ten years since I killed my first buffalo, and I've only killed twenty-three (or is it twenty-four?) myself in total. So it is a rare-enough thing for me. The dream I keep chasing is access to a steady supply of buffalo! |
