Great cartridge. In my opinion, the 416 is a contender for the title of Most Versatile Cartridge for Planet Earth. The 375 H&H wins the title only due to the availability of factory ammo seemingly everywhere.

The 416 shares with the 375 an excellent trajectory, manageable recoil, chambers in a variety of arms, good penetration, etc. Hard to argue with a man who shoots his 416 well.

My opinion regarding dangerous game and SS rifles has to be taken with a grain of salt as I've not been on safari to the dark continent. I do, however, believe a skilled and experienced DG rifleman can certainly use a single shot. Emphasis on skilled & experienced !

It would seem to me that a hunter contemplating such a safari should use a PH that is aware of the hunter's choice and prepared to work with him.

With a flexible PH and a hunter that has taken the responsibility to develop the additional skills required for a SS DG hunt, I would think the scenario is feasible.

Again, I am not an experienced DG hunter and some of the regular travelers to Africa here may spank me for this opinion.

Hunting DG is certainly an area where the newbie should seriously consider the opinions of the pros.
