Holmes: If I'm not mistaken, there's a pic of the Moulds mount in the Brownell's catalog, above the description. The front part of it is similar in shape to the factory q-r, but the Mould's is a 2-piece set up. The bottoms of both pieces contact the barrel fully, unlike the skeletonized factory q-r, and the rear piece extends out and just above the receiver to allow for more rearward adjustment to suit your eye-relief. I haven't measured it, but I believe the Mould's is slightly lower than the factory q-r. Yes, the NECG Weaver-base aperture does appear less "blocky" than the one with the Ruger-base, which I tried but didn't like for that reason. Still the Weaver-base aperture is not perfect either. Almost ideal would be the XS/Ashley low-mount Weaver-base "ghost ring," except it doesn't sit right on the cross-slot but instead extends flat off the back. XS does make a "high-mount" Weaver-base ghost ring, but that one sits TOO high, even with the various tall NEGC front sights. I've long wished that Williams would make their WGRS receiver sights for Ruger 77s, BRNOs/CZ 550s and other rifles with integral receiver mounts, one that would sit flat on the rear bridge and fasten tight to the integral grooves. Trust me, it's been frustrating testing the various rifle peeps & apertures you see in Brownell's, trying to find one that'll work on my #1, that's easy to adjust, locks-in tight, sits low and looks esthetically "correct" for the rifle. Shooting with peeps is pretty much a lot art anyway, except for a few old-timers and those recalcitrants like me who were lucky enough when young to have been shown how accurate they are. Frankly, out to certain distances you really don't need a scope. As far as scopes, I stay with the low powers, in the 1x-4x variable range. FIXED low-power scopes are okay, but I like to keep my options open so I prefer variables. Also, I want the scope sitting as LOW on the rifle as possible, so that it comes up fast - sort of a "point & shoot" thing, without needing to slide your cheek all over the stock trying to get the eye-relief and focus right. I do have a Leupold 2x7 in medium-height mounts for the #1, but that's used only for load development. Once I've found a certain bullet/load combo that's accurate, I reinstall the 1.75x-5 Burris and re-zero for that load if I'm going to hunt with it. (FYI: I use a Leupold Var. II 1x-4x in low-mounts on my .375 BRNO 602). |
