While I fully understand the sentiment, the same may have been said about the "Gordon" Dixons ~130 years ago... But thankfully that eccentric gentleman had the foresight (and the funds!!) to put together such a collection and keep them out of the hunting field. Look at them now!
Many were made for Rajah's armouries. And these were not collections to gather dust and be gazed at. As I understand it, these armouries were often loaners to guests. Many of the our wonderful vintage doubles and singles were liberated from India in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.
Eventually these 200 or 300 lovely fine gun collections will also be liberated to the market when the collector's estate is liquidated. Some fine guns may actually enjoy their first shot.
