Side mounts were used in the 'classic period', as well, but I don't think I'd prefer one to a 'Vienna Snapper' or a claw mount.

Fortunately, My M1910 had a claw mounted Gerard 'B' when Grand Dad bought it in Ceylon ca. 1931.
If it were bare, I'd probably leave it alone.
