Re: Winchester survey on calibres for new 1885

500Nitro,

The price is only high if compared to an out of the box Winchester. For a custom made rifle it is quite reasonable. I keep forgetting that people on this forum do not respond to a gun's price tag with "YOU PAID HOW MUCH?"

As far as I know, most of Ballard's rifles are made to order, but like most gunmakers they usually have a few of their guns in stock for immediate delivery. The company is located in Wyoming and produces reproductions of the old Ballard single shots as well as High Walls and Rolling Blocks. I believe they produce the High Walls in any chambering that is safe to use.

I think Ballard had the High Walls ranging in cost from $3,000 to $4000 US a few years ago, depending on options chosen. I've seen one of their Ballard single shot reproductions in person and it was easily worth the price, but I have not seen any of their High Walls in person. The High Wall actions they use are apparently not sourced from Winchester.

Ballard has a website at http://www.ballardrifles.com/ which has more information than I know about them. If you're interested in any of the guns they produce let me know and I'll call the company and bombard them with any questions you have.

Richard.
