Re: Stevens 44-1/2 - An American Classic

This is a nice write-up on the versatile Stevens 44 1/2 rifle. Boty the 38/55 and 25/20SS are great calibers. My first Stevens was in 25/20SS and was very accurate with cast 86 gr bullets.

I think the Stevens 44 1/2 is a great rifle. It is strong and so easy to change the barrel. If the case head is different, it is also easy to switch the extractor so that you have rifle that can shoot 2, 3 or more calibers.

BTW, the Stevens barrels were considered as excellent barrel.

Over the years, I have been fortunate to find several barrels that were removed because they were for obsolete calibers (25/25, 25/21, 32RF). I rechambered the 32RF barrel to 32 H&R installed it on a 44 1/2 action and that made a nice American "rook" rifle.
