In typical Ruger fashion, they got 95% of it perfect. And I mean that as a huge compliment. Growing up, my father had a very large collection of No. 1's, so I cut my teeth with them. I remember him saying that 50% of the U.S. market thought Ruger was crazy for bringing a single shot to the market, but the other 50% were standing in line! They seem to maintain a cult-like following, and for good reason.
I never understood why they couldn't take advantage of the single shot's ultra short action length and utilize a 26" barrel for standard calibers. I admittedly have a thing for long graceful barrels on standard caliber sporting rifles. They just make great foundations. I've got a few actions stuck back for re-barreling to .303 and .256 DM with 26" barrels, make a new Fraser-style safety and sights, and some reshaping of the existing stock typically makes for a gorgeous sporting rifle with minimal work.
