I was shocked when Ruger discontinued the Red Label over/under and unfortunately would not be surprised if one day the Ruger No. 1 is dropped from their catalog. In my mind the Ruger No. 1 is the only post-World War designed classic American production rifle. While many of us may take this rifle for granted it represents, in many ways, the last vestige of a proud American manufacturing tradition. Although I have no statistics in front of me, I would wager that the production cost of a Ruger No. 1 in relation to its annual sales make it an increasingly targeted sacred cow among the Ruger hierarchy. I would hope Ruger would think enough of Mr. William B. Ruger's masterstroke that it continues to produce them. However a quick check of Ruger's web site indicates that the caliber offerings equate to one per variant and with such limitations it is hard for me to see a long term future for this great rifle. |
