If it has a .45/70 barrel, perhaps the extractor has been altered from the original. The .50/70, original chambering, requires a different length extractor (larger diameter rim) than the .45/70 ctg.

I have an original barrel for that rifle, chambered .50/70. It is in nice shape, but has been browned & has no rear sight with it.(It's on my other Sharps)
