Re: Ruger #1 in 450 NE

Hello poprivit.

Great choice of rifle and a great choice of cartridge.

I built my own No.1 in 450NE and love it. Till I get time to re-stock it, I'm still running the standard factory stocks. I just added a 1-1/8" Kick EEZ recoil pad to give it a little more length (Always find standard Ruger length stocks too short for me). I like the Kick EEZ pads, firm enough to not botton out with larger calibres and soft enough to make a real nice difference. Mag-na-porting and recoil reducers in the stock wont be necessary.

I would highly recommend changing the safety. Those long 3-1/4" cases are almost garrenteed to hang up on the standard factory safety slide, mine did 99% of the time. Made a new contoured and checkered low profile slide and the cases now eject cleanly, always! Never had a hang up since.

Great cartridge in a No.1 the 450NE, because the action is so strong and given the case capacity, one could get 458 Lott type ballistics if you wanted to, but I havn't worried about that. The standard sort of elephant stopping load of a 480-500 grain projectile at 2150 odd fps is easy to achieve, loading those long straight cases is easy and case life is excellent (just use a good case sizing lube - Imperial Sizing Die Wax)

Best
ALEX
