One of the many beauties of the Ruger No1 is its ability to safely chamber and handle (with various amounts of work) basically anything from 17 Ackley Hornet through to the 577 Nitro Express.

That said, my recommendation for a practical maximum in a No1 would be one of the 500's.

One in 577 could be a bit of a handful unless it was up to an acceptable weight (12-13lbs I'd guess) Even then at that weight it might be awkward to get it "feel" right in the hands ie. have the right weight distribution. I'd like the oppotunity to build one though, it would be fun.
