Depends on what you mean by "strong action". If you mean strong enough to load the 45-70 to the same pressures as a 405 then they can get similar velocities for the same bullet weight. If you can load to even higher pressures then you can do a bit better. To me, the 405 is an "elegant" cartridge; being it was an early big bore designed for smokeless powder. What you give up to it when comparing to the 45-70 is cheaper, more available brass and a gigantic bullet selection. There are not very many .411" bullets out there, you could size down 416s to get better variety. I like the 405, I had a custom high wall built in that caliber a few years ago. |
