Alan - some time ago, I attempted, without success to relieve my friend of a Rossi side by side double. The barrels, if shortened to 24" from 26", would have enough meat for rifling. I meant to have a little side by side double rifle using 300gr. to 350gr. cast bullets. I figured it would easily make about 1,350fps with the 350's & 3" plastic, matching the .40/70 of Sharps fame.
The 3, triple Ought load is an older, but good load for defense and as you've found - for shooting goats. It as listed in an article in a Gun Digest from the 70's I think. Too, the .444 Marlin, also featured in a similar article, has all sorts of 'special' loads. The triple ball load was also listed for it, but using full sized, .451" sized down to .430". At 130gr. each at 1,800fps muzzle vel. and printing into an 18" circle at 100 meters, they'd put up a good 'fight' scenario.
