The first thing to do with the rifle is to see if it shoots. It is surprising how well some bad looking bores shoot. If it doesn't shoot you have nothing to lose by fire lapping or some other lapping technique. I have not done it but have heard reports of it working and if the barrel won't shoot you are not going to hurt it.

If that doesn't work, by all means rebarrel it. I differ with the "original at any cost" school. What good is a rifle that doesn't shoot? You might just as well collect stamps instead, they are easier to store and don't hurt as much when you drop one on your foot. Certainly no one in their right mind would take apart a fine condition original, but that is not what you are describing. A quality rebarrel job in original configuration, or even a complete restoration makes a lot more sense than tossing it in a closet and forgetting about it.
